BullsVision Exclusive: 2008 Olympian Damu Cherry Visits USF

TAMPA - Former University of South Florida standout and 2008 Olympian Damu Cherry stopped by USF's home track meet last Friday to train and watch the events unfold. She was with her husband and coach, Dennis Mitchell, a three-time Olympian who had several athletes entered in the meet.

BullsVision was there to catch up with Cherry and to hear how her training this season has been progressing. Among a host of topics, we discussed what brought her back to USF that day and what she thought of USF's new track and field facility.

Cherry became USF's fourth different Olympian in 2008 when she ran in Beijing in the 100 hurdles and became the school's most decorated when she won her semi-final heat before taking fourth in the final -- just 0.01 seconds from earning a bronze medal. It is that close finish that drives Cherry to continue to work toward London in 2012.

Her time of 12.65 at the Drake Relays earlier this season stands as the second-fastest time in the world this year. Click here for the press conference following the Drake Relays with Cherry and fellow hurdler Lolo Jones courtesy of FloTrack.org

USF's record holder in the 100 hurdles in 13.24 seconds, Cherry teamed with 2008 Olympian Sasha Springer, soon-to-be USF Athletics Hall of Famer Kerine Black and Amber Williams to earn All-America honors in 2001 in the 4x100 relay. Cherry was also a three-time NCAA qualifier in the 60 and 100 hurdles before moving on to her professional career.

Cherry is also the indoor record holder in the 55 hurdles and ranks second in the 60 hurdles and 60 meters, third in the 55 meters and fourth in the 100 meters. Cherry won the Conference USA title in the 60 hurdles in 1999.
