MONCTON, Canada - Rising sophomore Neamen Wise finished the first day of the decathlon in 11th place Tuesday at the IAAF World Junior Championships at the Stade Moncton 2010 Stadium at the Université de Moncton.

Wise totaled 3,923 points, putting him in a technical tie for 10th place with Jonay Jordan of Spain but 11th based on the end-of-day results. France's Kevin Mayer led all competitors following the first five events with 4,159 points.

The Championships are being held at the newly built stadium in Moncton, Canada in the province of New Brunswick, a little under 100 miles from the border with Maine.

Starting the day off strong in the 100 meters, Wise posted the fastest time of the day among the world's best decathletes when he ran 10.84. He just edged out his previous best in the 100 that had stood at 10.85 and the next best competitor at the championships who ran 10.90.

His day continued in the long jump, another of his strongest events, as Wise placed third overall with a leap of 23-11, tying his career best set at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships in early May.

Wise ranked second overall in the points standings following the long jump, the second event of the day, after his early first-place sitting after the conclusion of the 100 meters.

Against a field of 26 competitors, Wise also finished 10th in the high jump with a leap of 6-3.5. He finished third in Group B, the second of two groups to compete, taking three unsuccessful attempts at 6-4.75.

In the last event of the day, Wise tied his personal best from his high school days in the 400 meters after he ran 50.33, putting him at 11th overall.

He also posted a throw of 39-8.75 in the shot put, placing him 23rd overall.

One of two Americans to compete in the decathlon at the championships, Wise joined 2010 University of Arkansas signee Kevin Lazas in Moncton, as Lazas sits 14th overall after the first day of action.

Wise qualified for the event after capturing the title at the USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships over Lazas June 23-24 at Drake. Wise totaled 7,300 points and held off Lazas, who compiled 7,291 points. Wise finished four seconds behind Lazas in the final event, the 1,500 meters, to win the title last month.

He recently completed his rookie season despite missing a good portion of the indoor and outdoor seasons due to a leg injury. He finished seventh in the long jump at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships and also competed in the 400 hurdles. He was also an indoor qualifier in the 60 meters, 60 hurdles and long jump.

Wise will finish up the decathlon Wednesday, beginning with the 110 hurdles at 9 a.m. and ending with the 1,500 meters at 9:10 p.m. In between, he will also compete in the discus, pole vault and javelin.
