GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The University of South Florida cross country teams returned to action at the 22nd Annual Mountain Dew Invitational, hosted by the University of Florida, on Saturday. The women's team had an impressive third-place finish with 123 points in the 5k, while the men's team took eighth place with 206 points in the 8k.
"Overall, it was a good showing," said Assistant Cross Country Coach Dena Reif, when asked about her impression of the meet.
Junior Nicole Rozario set a personal best with a time of 17:37.27, placing third overall. She was followed by junior Yasmin Smith, who also set a personal best with a time of 18:15.82 to finish 14th. Junior Shaniel Chambers used a personal-best 18:44.94 to place 27th, while juniors Devin Spoerle (36th, 19:01.90) and Christine Johnson (43rd, 19:15.11) rounded out the top five runners for the women's team.
The women's team was without their number two runner Allie Prendergast, who was held out with a stress reaction. She is expected to return to competition in two weeks at the Paul Short Invitational.
"It would have been interesting to see what we could have done with Allie," added Reif.
Senior Pedro Carela led the men's team with a personal-best 25:46.29 to place 14th. Junior Phillip Wise placed 19th with a time of 26:12.42. Lucas Simari (40th, 27:03.84), Jonathon Bing (55th, 27:33.63) and Connor Bauer (78th, 28:20.94) completed the scoring for the men's team.
