Karimah Davis Leads Florida Contingent At LSU High School Classic

The indoor season is in full swing for many states and our Florida athletes are getting in on the action. The Fast Lane Track Club who has competed in Alabama was one of three area clubs to head to the LSU High School Classic in Baton Rouge. 2016 4A 400m state champion Karimah Davis won the same event in 57.89s and helped lead the team's 4x200 and 4x400m relay teams to victory. The relays also consisted of Venice Stewart, Jacious Sears, and Latasha Smith. Fast Lane Track Club coach Derek Walker was impressed with what he saw from Davis.

"I think Karimah did well. We're on the track that I want her to be. On I really don't want her to pick too fast She was very happy we've won the 400 back to back there and she's anchored the winning 4 x 2 and 4 x 4 two years in a row.  I think with Karimah she's starting to realize that this is her final year of high school, so although she's winning she's thinking about running faster."

He really liked what he saw from Sears and Smith as well.

"Jacious is just a sophomore and ran 7.74 and Latasha is just a sophomore. She ran 56 in the 400 last year as a freshman."

The Hallandale Thunder club team, composed of members of Hallandale High School's track team also captured some hardware on the LSU campus. Senior Calvin Golson won the 400m dash in a time of 50.06. Golson was also third in the triple jump with a mark of 42'03".75.

The boys 4x400m relay team finished 2nd with a time of 3:26.65, while the girls 4x2 also earned runner-up honors behind Fast Lane Track Club. Other notable Hallandale performances include:

  • Favien Lively - 60mH - 4rd - 8.42s
  • Richara McNeil - 60mH - 3rd - 9.35s
  • Destiny Castillo- Long Jump -3rd - 17'8"
  • Girls 4x800 - 3rd - 10:26.40

If you think that's depth the Chargettes Track Club, the future Chargers received solid performances from Jada Joseph who was third in the triple jump with a mark of 36'0. Fellow 8th grader Mahogan McCoy competed in the 60m dash and ran 8.49s.

Last but not least was the group from IMG Academy in Bradenton. Leading the way was Chandler Bergeron who notched two wins in the 1,600 and 3,200 with times of 5:27.35 and 11:40.15. Bergeron's teammate Alexa Riley King was the runner-up in the 800m with a respectable 2:27.83. IMG girls also won the 4x400m relay with a time of 4:10.75. The duo of Rikko Brathwaite and Patrick Dougherty were the top male performers for the Ascenders. Brathwaite, a senior, competing in his first indoor meet ever clocked a time of 6.94s to finish as the runner-up in the 60m dash.
