The Southridge girls finished just six points behind 4A state champions Lakewood Ranch in 2016. It's an impressive feat when you take into account they didn't come in first in any event. Of the point scorers on that squad, they return all but two members, including sprinters Symone Mason, Shaniya Williams, and Kayla Johnson, as well as jumper Courtney Gibson and are the favorites to bring home the title.

4A State Meet Preview: WP Girls, STA Boys Sure Bets, Boys Ind. Title Up For Grabs Todd Grasley Nov 3, 2016

In the state's largest classification 4A, three of the four state champion individuals and teams from 2015 have a good chance to repeat in 2016. The easiest perhaps is in the team races where the Winter Park girls are looking for their third straight while the St. Thomas Aquinas boys are favorites to go back to back with their core nucleus. Bailey "Hurricane" Hertenstein is the reigning girls champion, is ranked number one, and has lost one race in her whole career as a junior. On the boy's side the title is up for grabs with a group of runners all relatively close in time and skill. We take an in-depth look at the 4A meet.

The real battle will be for second place where Lakewood Ranch, North Port, Sarasota, and Newsome all have a shot to make the podium and will rely on the back end of their line up to get there. 4A Team Scores: 2015 Runner-Up Southridge Looks To Upend South Florida Foe STA Reign Todd Grasley Jan 24, 2016

St. Thomas Aquinas has a string of three straight state championships in 4A dating back to 2013. In 2012, the Raiders' girls were runner-up. According to our team scores, they are the favorites again to win it all, but not so fast. If you take out the 38 points slated for senior Khalifa St. Fort who is competing unattached this season and training under Olympian Ato Boldon, fellow South Florida teammate and 2015 runner-up Southridge is sitting in prime position to end the Raiders reign at the top.

Hi everyone!  As this year’s track season has come to an end and another exciting year comes to a close, the 2013 seniors are heading out of the high school arena.  Many XC/Track & Field seniors and I are graduating, and for some getting ready for the collegiate running world.  I have been reflecting on my four years of high school running and all those I am grateful for having an impact, flrunners is certainly one of them.

Lakewood Ranch Star On Her Road To Recovery Todd Grasley May 15, 2012

Olivia Ortiz was at the peak of her high school career. The Lakewood Ranch junior had captured a cross country state title and was capping off the year with a great run outdoors with a championship in the 4x800 meter relay, and a runner up finish in the 1600 meters, before the injury bug struck. Ortiz fell to the track with 50 meters left in the 3200 meters. The diagnosis a broken femur. In an flrunners exclusive she shares with us what happened in that moment, the surgery following, how she is holding up now.

Several days after anchoring the Lakewood Ranch ladies to a state championship in the 4x800m relay senior Devin McDermott announced she will be running collegiately for the University of Florida. She says the recruiting process was definitely overwhelming, but at the end of the day she had to focus on what was going to benefit her most and which place just felt right.

The Lakewood Ranch junior was named the Gatorade Florida GIrls Cross Country Runner Of The Year.  Ortiz took home the individual state championship at the 3A meet and advanced to Foot Locker Nationals where she finished 19th among the nation's top runners.

In Her Own Words: Olivia Ortiz On The Foot Locker Experience Olivia Ortiz Dec 14, 2011

Sadly, the 2011 cross country season has come and gone and now another season in the past. To say the least, it was an action packed competitive season including too many nail biting races to name. As much anticipation awaits for the season to begin, once it gets started it seems that weeks filled with hours of practicing and competitive races fly by. Looking back, over the entire season it has been quite exciting for the sunshine state and I cannot wait to see what the track and field season has in store.

In Her Own Words: Olivia Ortiz Todd Grasley Nov 23, 2011

The crowd cheered, anticipation was in the air, and the final gun went off to conclude the exciting 2011 cross country season this past Saturday morning. The state meet always can be expected to bring the most excitement of the season while creating a race stage for the best of the best in Florida to compete.

Hello! I hope everyone had a great Regional meet this past weekend! After all the many cross country weekends this season, taking place in all different locations around the state of Florida, I can finally write in my blog this week that the next race is the state meet taking place in Dade City.

In Her Own Words: Olivia Ortiz Todd Grasley Nov 7, 2011

Hello everyone! Where has the time gone? I can’t believe this past weekend Districts took place already. It’s crazy how time flies. Before I talk about my District experience this past weekend I wanted to share my thoughts about the sport we all love...cross country.

In Her Own Words: Olivia Ortiz Olivia Ortiz Oct 31, 2011

This past Saturday I finally ran very close to home in the Manatee County Championship which included sven other local high schools. I was very excited to have a race finally in Lakewood Ranch; making it very convenient for family and friends to watch. Coming into the county meet, I had a feeling it might be a little different race compared to the other highly competitive races during this cross country season.

In Her Own Words: Olivia Ortiz Olivia Ortiz Oct 17, 2011

As I knew it would be, this past Saturday morning was intense facing the best competition in the state. Stepping off the bus, about an hour before race time there was a crisp chill in the air making it perfect racing weather similar to last year’s chilly conditions. The Pre State Invitational is a great opportunity to run the state course.

In Her Own Words: Olivia Ortiz Olivia Ortiz Oct 10, 2011

Wow! What an exciting past two weekends filled with cross country! Last weekend, I raced in the Flrunners.com Invitational in Titusville. Going into the race I was faced with a bad head cold, but I was determined not to let it bring me down.

In Her Own Words: Olivia Ortiz Olivia Ortiz Sep 26, 2011

What a great cross country weekend! This weekend the Lakewood Ranch team and I ran in the Mountain Dew Invitational at the University of Florida. We all stayed in a hotel the night before since Gainesville is a three hour drive from Lakewood Ranch. That always makes for great fun and bonding time as a team. I was very excited and focused about this race throughout this week. As a team, we were excited about racing on the Gator campus again and then the opportunity to watch the college races, which is really inspiring before the start of our race.

In Her Own Words: Olivia Ortiz Olivia Ortiz Sep 19, 2011

My name is Olivia Ortiz and I am a junior at Lakewood Ranch. First, I want to say thank you to flrunners for letting me contribute to their incredible website! What a great opportunity and honor to be apart of. What an amazing start to the 2011 season with the first two races having intense competition, forcing everyone to get into race mode. Opening race last week was the Déjà vu Invitational in Tampa also know as the “mudfest”.

Warrior of the Week: Godwin, Ortiz Todd Grasley Sep 13, 2011

Buchholz senior Chris Godwin and Lakewood Ranch junior Olivia Ortiz are this week's Warrior of the Week. Godwin won the Ridgeview Bob Hans Invitational in a season best time of 15:48.77. Ortiz ran a gutsy performance at the 2011 Deja Vu Invitational on a mud soaked course. She finished just three-tenths of a second behind winner Kacy Smith in 18:26.30.

Mustangs Find Inspiration Through Music Todd Grasley Aug 19, 2011

A trail run just isn't the same without a little music. The Lakewood Ranch girls' cross country team might be mistaken for the cast of Glee, as they belt out the Foundations' hit single "Build Me Up Buttercup" during workouts. Junior Olivia Ortiz says the squad doesn't discriminate when it comes to the classics."We mostly sing while we are in the middle of runs. We sing oldies and new songs. It's pretty much whatever comes to our heads at the moment. I think singing is just a way for us to make what we are doing fun."

Lakewood Ranch: One Week at a Time Jason Byrne Oct 11, 2010

Though considered by many to be the top girls team in the state at the season's midway point, Lakewood Ranch still feels like they are the underdogs.  They looked like anything but with their dominant victory at Disney this past weekend, blowing by the out-of-state competition and looking forward to a showdown with 3A rival Chiles at Prestate on Saturday.
