Salute To Seniors: Cameron McCutcheon - Lyman High School

Cameron McCutcheon has been a key member of the Lyman distance squad over the past four years and will continue his running career at Troy University.

What has been your most memorable race/moment of your high school career?

I would have to say my most memorable race moment was when I was a sophomore and finally broke 17 minutes for the first time. It was a 40 second PR. The summer training was finally paying off.

Who would you consider your biggest competition?

I would say my biggest competition was my team as a whole. For my 4 years of running there was  always someone faster than me whether it was Brian Anderson, Marcel Krige, Jordan Armstrong and Josh Jacques. They always pushed me.

What was your greatest accomplishment?

My senior year in track I had a stress fracture in my hip all of cross country. Mentally I was pretty down going into track, but I ended up breaking ten minutes in the two mile which I thought I would never do after the whole injury.

If you could do it all over again what would you change about your running career in high school?

I would listen to my body A LOT more. If I listened my senior year, I probably wouldn’t have had my injury.

What was the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?

Myself. Mentally pushing myself day in day out was always an obstacle.

What will you miss the most?

The camaderie of my team. We saw each other every single day over the summer. We had a lot of bonding  moments whether it be our Clermont runs, camp at Brevard or just our NBA 2k tournaments. Those are the moments I will miss.

What advice you would give to younger athletes?

Have fun and don’t stress to much about it. You are 16 years old, enjoy your youth. If you aren’t having fun while running then you probably shouldn’t be doing the sport.

What influence has your coach had with respect to your performance and overall life goals?

Coach Finke taught me that the world doesn’t end after one bad race. If you gave it your best then that’s all you can ask for.

What are your college plans?

I’ll be running cross country and track for Troy University this fall in Troy, Alabama! plan on majoring in Global Finance.

Who would you like to say thank you to?

I would like to say thank you to my parents for giving me all the support throughout my whole life, my teammates for trusting me throughout my years, and my coach for never giving up on me.

Is there anything else you'd like to add?

Watch out for Jordan Armstrong and Josh Jacques this fall! Don’t be surprised is all I can say,
