Discus State Champ Signs With Cal State-Northridge

Nova senior Monique Griffiths capped off her senior season as a state champion. Griffiths won the discus with a throw of 140-5 at the 4A State Finals. Now with her high school season behind her, she is ready to embark on the next stage of her track and field career at California State University-Northridge. She says the college experience was fun and interesting and allowed her to figure out what she wanted as far as her academic and athletic future.

"In addition to Cal State Northridge I received offers from the University of South Florida and the University of Southern Mississippi. I'm looking forward to the experience of being exposed to both college competition and training. I hope that I get a chance to throw the hammer or at least learn it and I'd also like to get a chance to learn the techniques of throwing the javelin as well."

Her success at Nova is something she can carry onto the next level. Griffiths has personal best marks of 149-8 in the discus and 39-3 in the shot put.  As a junior she finished as state runner-up in the discus and  came back in 2012  to win a state championship. She says she is fortunate to have come across such a great high school track team and a great coaching staff over the past four years.

"If I can push out 160 feet in the discus before I go to college that would be awesome. However, I know that this whole experience could not have been any better. Winning the state title in my senior year is such a tremendous accomplishment and it still hasn't hit me."
