Coach Phllip Browning enters his second year at the helm of the Chiles track and field program. In 2016, the Timberwolves boys were the 3A state champions to continue their streak to three in a row, while the girls team sent eight athletes to state and finished in a three way tie for sixth. We caught up with Browning to get an inside look at this year's team.
There's something about pole vaulting on your home turf, familiarity with the runway and your surroundings. Just ask Winter Park senior and Air Force signee Gregory Skage. Last year, at the Bob Mosher Wildcat Open he opened up his season with a new personal best of 15'9. At the 2017 edition of the meet, Skage's second meet of the season, he upped his previous best by ONE FOOT, clearing 16'9.
Southridge senior Symone Mason ran a blistering 53.25 to win the 400m dash at the Louie Bing Classic. We merged the results from EVERY meet in the state and ranked the top 50 performances to see who won the week.
Charles Rivera and Charles Hicks of Bolles clocked the fastest two times in the boys 1,600m. Meanwhile in the sprints, Tyrese Cooper made his outdoor debut with a splash running 45.45 to win the 400, but then being DQ'ed for taunting after his 200m race which he would have won. We merged the results from around the state and tallied the top 50 performances in every event to see who won the week.
Sarasota Riverviews' Elayna Goodman opened up her season by torching the field in the girl's 3,200m at the George Jenkins Invitational. Goodman's performance was one of hundreds of amazing marks we saw this season. Good news for track and field fans around the state is that it's only week one!

Abraham Lincoln Middle School 8th grader Tamari Davis was third at the Adidas Dream 100 last summer. In December, she competed indoors and ran 7.60 in the 60m dash and 24.95 in the 200m dash. Less than two months later she continued show why she is one of the most promising young talents in the nation.

The Louie Bing Classic is the largest of any competition with over 60 teams and some of the fastest athletes in the nation, but it's not the only show in town.
