The 2017 cross country season is gearing up with preseason classics around the state. None are larger than the Cecil Field Pre-Season Classic which welcomes over two dozen teams to the Jacksonville area. We take a look at both the girls and boys individual and team battles in our virtual meet.
Fun fact. If you rearrange the letters in Fletcher senior Kayley Delay's name it spells "Yale Yale KD." Maybe she was born to attend the Ivy League University, and third oldest institution of higher education in the United States. Delay, arguably the top female distance recruit in the state of Florida with personal bests of 4:57.93 (1,600m), 10:30.30 (3,200m), and 17:37.40 (5k XC). She was the 4A 3,200m state champion , 1,600m runner up, and Cross Country Finals runner-up in 2016.
It's regionals week! 4A, Florida's largest cross country classification, will kick off the road to state at the regional level as athletes head to South Florida on Thursday for 4A Region 4. We preview all four regionals in addition to seeing how our virtual meets see things playing out. It's going to be a crazy ride as the top individuals and teams hope to advance to Tallahassee for the Cross Country Finals on November 5th.
Buchholz senior Calum McFetridge clocked his second sub 16 minute time of the season to win the 4A District 1 Championship, but it was Mandarin who put them in a race that saw each team score an identical 54 points. On the girl's side Fletcher senior Kayley Delay and freshman Liberty Pigg went 1-2 to give their squad the team title over Mandarin with 33 points. Ricky Quintana was on-site and recaps the day's events.
Liberty Pigg might just be the next big star to come out of Fletcher High School in North Florida. The freshman owns a PR of 19:58.65 from the UNF XC Invitational where she finished 6th and is ranked 121st in the state regardless of class. Kayley DeLay calls it her "weird tradition." It might be her secret weapon. Before each race, she takes a bite of her favorite candy bar, then saves the rest for after the event. (via jacksonville.com)
Fletcher High School sophomore Kayley Delay finished 31st at last year's 4A Cross Country Finals and was 71st at the Foot Locker South Regional. After finishing 8th in the 3,200m at the 4A state championship and running a season best of 11:08.28, Delay logged nearly 350 miles this summer combined with cross training and workouts six days a week. This season she is off to a great start, winning her first meet of the year, the University of North Florida 110% XC Invitational, in 18:31.97, the second fastest time in her high school career.
John Weaver of Mandarin picked a great time to set a new personal best. The senior won the 4A-1 District Championship at the Flagler County Fairgrounds in 15:51.78. FPC's Thomas Carroll coming off a great performance at the Five Star Conference Championship finished second in 16:01.39.
While Eric Tallbacka and Danielle Van Liere earned much deserved individual conference championships, it was the Mandarin Mustangs who cleaned house, winning every team championship of the evening.
