FSU Track Assistants Harnden, Harvey Named Tops In South Region

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State indoor track & field assistant coaches Ken Harnden and Karen Harvey have been recognized as the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) NCAA South Region assistant coaches of the year.

The announcement was made Monday as the Seminoles prepare for the NCAA Indoor Championships meet, March 8-9 at the Randal Tyson Track Complex in Fayetteville, Ark. This marks the fourth time that both Harnden and Harvey have been selected as top assistants for the region.

Harnden, who was promoted to Associate Head Coach last summer, also serves as FSU’s Director of Sprints, Hurdles & Relays. He was selected South Region Men’s Assistant Coach of the Year for the Indoor season after the Seminoles under his direction piled up 55 points on the final day of the ACC Championship meet, where FSU placed second.

Sprinters Marvin Bracy and Dentarius Locke (60-meter dash), ACC Most Valuable Track Performer Stephen Newbold (200) and the Seminoles’ 4x400 relay team all qualified for the NCAA Championship meet.

Harvey, who directs the FSU women’s distance group, was selected the South Region Women’s Assistant Coach of the Year after her charges produce 46 of the Seminoles’ 100 points at the ACC Championship meet.

The Seminoles’ Distance Medley Relay team shattered the conference record with an ACC Championship win in 10:57.41, which ranked 12th in NCAA history at the time. The relay team, which is the No. 3 seed entering the NCAA Championship meet, was comprised of Amanda Winslow, Sage Watson, Georgia Peel and Colleen Quigley. Winslow has also qualified for the NCAA meet in the mile and 3000-meter events.

Harnden, now in his 14th season with the program, is a three-time recipient of the USTFCCCA National Assistant Coach of the Year award (2005, 2007 and 2012).  In her sixth season at FSU, Harvey has claimed four South Region Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year honors to go along with her four Women’s Assistant Track & Field Coach of the Year recognitions.
