Floridians Show Up Big At Caribbean Scholastic Invitational

On-Site Coverage

A group of six Floridians headed south to the sunshine of Carolina, Puerto Rico for the Caribbean Scholastic Invitational. They showed why they are not only the best in our state, but nationally and internationally as well coming home with five individual golds, one silver, two relay golds, and one relay silver.

Miami Northwestern's throwing sensation Lloydricia Cameron continued to rack up more titles. After sweeping the shot and discus at both the 3A State Championship and the Golden South Classic, Cameron did exactly that in Puerto Rico. In a shortened field, the junior hurdled the shot 43-11.25 and the discus 151-09 to bring home gold.

Floridians weren't done leaving their mark on the field events. Another two time winner at state Darrielle McQueen of North Florida Christian, swept the horizontal jumps. McQueen has been the queen of the triple jump this year and leaped a new personal best of 40-09.50 which ties her for 12th nationally. Not bad for the class of 2014 star. She also took home the trophy in the long jump after her mark of 17-09.50.

Sisters Gaby and Daryth Gayles of Holy Trinity also made the trip to the Southern Caribbean. Daryth was entered in the 100 and ran a 12.19 in the prelims which would have given her the third fastest time coming into the finals, but she did not make it to the line and is not on the results. Gaby, the 1A State Champion in the 400, was victorious in the quarter mile edging out North Carolina sophomore Layla White with a time of 55.36. Gayles was also a member of the winning 4x400 meter relay squad, and silver medal 4x100 team which also featured Darrielle McQueen.

Fresh off his trip to New York City for the Dream 100, Kendal Williams of Stanton Prep, picked up some more frequent flyer miles. In a 2.6 mile per hour head wind, Williams posted a time of 10.59 finishing second to Zharnell Hughes of Angullia . Hughes was the U20 100m champion at the 2013 CARIFTA games. Interesting of note, when I spoke with Hughes after that win he mentioned he was considering FSU as a possible college destination. Williams has also said he likes the Seminoles. If both were to attend, the tradition of great Seminole sprinters would get even greater. Williams leads off the winning 4x100 team in Puerto Rico. The team also included Tony Brown, Darius Watkins and Jalen Jones.
