Salute To Seniors - Garret Westlake - P.K. Yonge School

What was your most memorable race?

My most memorable race was the 2009 state meet when I was a freshman. It was the first time I had ever gotten top ten  in a major race! I placed 9th in 16:19 and I couldn't have been happier. There is no better feeling in the world than having your name called out as you walk onto the podium.

Who would you consider your biggest competition over your four years?

I would have to say running against the Trinity Prep team, and specifically Daniel Salas. The first time I remember racing him was the state meet when we were both in the 8th grade, and he beat me by one second. It's always been a great friendly rivalry and competing with him and his team made me faster and work harder.

What was your greatest accomplishment?

My greatest accomplishment I think was the the Flrunners Invitational my junior year. I ran my PR there, and placed 7th. My previous PR before that race was from the the state meet my freshman year, and I was so excited to finally PR, and be under 16 minutes for the first time.

If you could do it all over again, what would you change about your running career in high school?

I wouldn't change anything. I believe everything happens for a reason, so I am happy with how every turned out.  I would make sure I truly enjoyed every single day bbecause it goes by so fast.

What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?

Dealing with different coaches was really hard. We had four different coaches since I was in the 9th grade, and it was always difficult to adjust from one style of coaching to another.

What will you miss the most?

Definitely my teammates. They are my family and have been there to watch me grow and compete through high school. I'm going to miss watching them race and improve every week!

What advice you would give to younger athletes?

That running is more of a mental sport than physical. If you want to be the best you have to truly believe that you are training better than everyone else and want it more than they do. This quote always helped me out when I was struggling with training. "Some people train knowing they're not working as hard as other people. I can't fathom how they think." - Alberto Salazar

What are your college plans?

I will be running for The University of Wyoming and will major in geology.

Who would you like to say thank you to?

My family, all of my coaches, and my teammates. Especially my teammate Rashad Harding who graduated in 2011. He passed away a week ago and I wouldn't be the runner or person I am today without him. He pushed me as a runner and he was one of my role models and best friends.

Is there anything else you like to add?

I would like to say thank you to Flrunners and Todd Grasley for giving me the opportunity to share my story with everyone, and being able to blog during cross country season. Keep up the good work!
