In Her Own Words: Emily Edwards

Hello flrunners, my name is Emily Edwards, and I am going to be a senior at Fort Myers High School.  I would like to start by thanking Todd and flunners for giving me the opportunity to blog I have always enjoyed reading other blogs, and I am excited to write one of my own.

I hope everyone has had a great summer full of training. My team had an awesome time bonding and logging in many miles over these warm months. I know that I have definitely enjoyed having new freshman on our team to welcome them to our crazy bunch.  I am so lucky to have this group of girls and I can easily consider them my best friends. We were able to grow stronger bonds during our weeklong trip to Hiawassee, GA.

This week was our chance to run on a variety of hilly trails. Southwest Florida is so flat that our hill training is on a bridge. Since we were so close to the border of North Carolina we did some of our runs there. Both states were equally as beautiful and they were great locations to get high mileage. Besides running, we went lake swimming, tubing, and white water rafting. These are memories that I will cherish for a long time!

I have been back in school for a few days now, which means back to extra warm practices. Last Friday, we weren’t able to run outside due to lightning so my coach had the idea to do our workout through the hallways of the school. This was definitely an interesting experience to say the least and I hope to never have to turn the hall corners that fast ever again.

For all the seniors this coming year, enjoy your last high school cross country season! It is a very bittersweet season for me, as I have been running varsity cross country since the 6th grade. I remember toeing the line as an 11 year old with girls as old as 18. You could assume that I was very intimidated. I can’t believe that I’m finally one of the older girls; time sure does fly.

I wish everyone, especially the seniors, a very successful and enjoyable season!
