FACA Official Cross Country Rankings #2 *Updated!*

Now that the first week of official competition has passed, our volunteer pollster's have been able to start getting a look at some of the best teams and individuals from around the state at the beginning of this 2013 Cross Country season. While many squads were still participating in local jamborees or time trials, as compared to larger invitationals, the bottom line is that racing season is upon us! So let's see what our pollster's have for us this week...

1A Girls Rankings
By: Nathan Means, Mount Dora Bible School, nmmeans999@yahoo.com

Team Rankings:

Commentary: My sincere apologies for not sending in pre-season rankings.  This week is tough because a few teams still haven't run and a few more got rained out.  These are a merge of first weekend, pre-season races, and pre-season rankings.  The picture should be much clearer in two weeks.

  Team Name, Region (Prev.)  Comments:
1. Holy Trinity, R3 (4) Out of the gate like crazy with a 19:34 average at Wickham Park
2. Oak Hall School, R2 (1) Looks like they held back a lot for the first week, only averaging 20:07 at Ridgeview
3. Providence School, R1 (3) 20:04 at North Florida 110% is slightly faster than Oak Hall, but not sure how much they were holding back
4. Shorecrest Prep, R3 (2) Haven't run yet…
5. Brevard HEAT, R3 (9) Nice jump on the 1A crowd with a 21:47 average at Wickham Park
6. Community School of Naples, R3 (6) Solid start at Estero with a 22:13 average
7. St. Johns Country Day, R1 (5) 22:50 average at Bob Hans is another good start to the season
8. Father Lopez, R2 (NR) Big jump into top 10 with a good showing at Spikes and Spurs, averaging 22:53
9. Westminster Christian, R4 (8) Haven't run yet…
10. First Academy (Orlando), R2 (7) Posted a 23:14 average at the Ted Benz Jamboree, not sure if entire squad was there
11. Circle Christian, R2 (13) 23:18 average at Ted Benz, rained out at Trinity Prep along with TFA
12. Calvary Christian (Clearwater), R3 (NR) 23:40 average at Holloway Park
13. Maclay School, R1 (15) 24:07 average at Cougar XC Challenge
14. Kings Academy, R4 (10) Haven't run yet…
15. Westminster Academy, R4 (14) Haven't run yet…

Individual Rankings:

Commentary: Going strictly by computer rankings for individuals here while taking weekend #1 results at face value.  This is more or less just a shout out to the first weekend's top runners as too many haven't posted a time yet.  The next poll will be much more complete.

2A Girls Rankings
By: Mike Becker, Ransom Everglades, mbecker@ransomeverglades.org

Team Rankings:

Commentary: Not many schools opened up during a hot, and (in some places wet) rainy, muddy weekend. So it is IMPOSSIBLE to shuffle rankings much.  However, some teams strutted their feathers. Bolles put 7 runners under 21:00  That is certainly going to be a big "ouch" for the rest of the state. Also giving solid openers were Carrollton, Bishop Kenney, Eastside, Rockledge and Titutsville.  Lemon Bay and Kenney appears to have opened up without some returning runners?   Other than adding Rockledge and Titusville who excelled on fast Wickham Park Course, not much to do yet.  The next update will be a big one of course.  I believe strongly in head to head and NOT COMPARING times.  But please email me with any comments and input.

  Team Name, Region (Prev.)  Comments:
1. Bolles (1) Seven under 21:00 is trouble for the pack of teams chasing
2A Pine Crest (2A) Off
2B Lemon Bay (2B) Ran at Lemon  Bay without top returners?
2C Ransom Evereglades (2C) Off
5. Carrolton   Opened well  and finsihed third at slow….. Make it a Very slow… Estero course where only the winner broke 20:00
6. Bishop Kenney   Opened on slow Ridgeview Course without some top returners?
7. Eastside   Opened at Slow Ridgeview Course
8. Titusville   Wickham Park
9. Rockledge   Wickham Park
10. Robinson   Off and probably better than this ranking
11. Lake Highland Prep
12. Immokalee
13. West Florida Tech
14. Nature Coast
15. Berkeley Prep
16. Academy of Holy Names
17. Bishop John Snyder
18. Wakulla
19. West Shore

Individual Rankings:

Commentary: Very few teams opened up so head to head matchups are missing.  Despite others' attempts to compare runners by times ( a very error prone method to say the least), the only way to compare is head to head.  Thus there is likely still to be a lot of disagreement and/or confusion over matchups.  Controversy improves ratings :) However,  certainly some notable additions are required including Madison Harris ( state 800 medalist) and some more Bolles runners.  I am not gonna move runners down far who haven't opened yet. I am also not gonna move down teammates who packed together yet beat each other by only a couple of seconds.  Also gonna keep 21:00 ( last year or this year) as a breaking point to make the cut for now.  I love input

Individual Rankings:

Commentary: Some of the previous top 25 ran last week, but solid start to Xiang at the Bob Hans Invite and Edwards taking on the tough Estero course. Looking forward the next coming weeks. A lot of fast times at Bob Hans which is consistent to previous years as well as slow times at Estero. Halloway produced a lot more quicker times than last year.

Boys State Rankings by Classifications:

1A Boys Rankings
By: Mark Caulfield, The Geneva School, markscaul@aol.com

Team Rankings:

Commentary: Not a whole lot of movement in our second poll as many teams are just getting started and others who chose to skip the first week of competition. The most significant move though comes at #1 where Holy Trinity jumps ahead of Maclay School. Coach Butler of HTA has his kids ready for a repeat run with an impressive opening start. P.K. Younge also started out strong running a pre-season meet averaging 18:02 for their first 4 finishers.  Look for teams to begin revealing their fitness, talent, depth, and strength levels over the next few weeks.

  Team Name, Region (Prev.)  Comments:
1. Holy Trinity Academy (2) Opens up the season winning their own Wickham Park Jamoboree placing four athletes in the top 8 (all under 17:00). Fifth runner sets a nice PR as well. But, big gap to 5th, 6th and 7th runners could still leave them vulnerable if someone in the top 4 goes down.
2. Maclay School (1) Losing one of their top 3 runners to soccer bumps Maclay down a notch in the early season polls but look for Coach Droze and the Mauraders to fill that gap fast.  Freshman Jake Mazziotta looks to help with a nice PR at the pre-season Miller Landing race.
3. Shorecrest Prep (3) No meet performances this past week. Getting ready to launch their season opener at the Indian Rocks Invitational on September 5.
4. Pensacola Christian Acad. (4) No meet performances reported this past week as the Warriors are sticking close to home getting ready for a big season.
5. P.K. Younge School (7) The Blue Wave look to be a team ready to make a big splash.  In the pre-season Bucholz Jamboree on last years Region course, their number 1 opened at 16:48 and 2-4 ran together in 18:27-18:28. No results on number 5, but this team is clearly ready.
6. Indian Rocks Christian (5) 7th place finish in the elite race at the Holloway Park Jamboree (18:49 team average). Team looks to have good depth with nine boys competing for a varsity spot which could help push them to improve.
7. The Geneva School (6) Got rained out at their season opener at the Trinity Prep Twilight Invitational. Looking forward to see where they are at this week at Katie Caples.
8. St. Petersburg Catholic (8) No meet performances this past week. Getting ready to open at the Indian Rocks Invitational this upcoming week.
9. North Florida Christian (9) Opened up their season at Cougar XC Challenge with a third place finish. Missing some returners from last years State team but picked up a newcomer at #3 who will help.
10. Admiral Farragut Academy (10) The Blue Jacketes began their season with an 11th place finish at the Holloway Park Jamboree (19:44 team average). Their #1 seems to have returned in great shape while 2-5 may need a little more time to get ready. Still a team to keep an eye on.
11. Father Lopez Catholic High School (NR) Opened up their season with a 7th place finish at the Spikes and Spurs Classic with a tight 1:12 pack through the top 5 that averaged 19:14 over the 5K race.
12. Oak Hall School (NR) Finished 14th at the Ridgeview Bob Hans Invitational with a 19:28 team average.
13. Brevard Heat (NR) Finished 12th at the Wickham Park Jamboree with a 19:28 team average.
14. Seffner Christian Academy (12) Opened up at the Holloway Park Jamboree with a 12th place (19:48 team average). Look for team to continue to improve through the season.
15. Circle Christian School (15) Got rained out at their season opener at the Trinity Prep Twilight Invitational but did run the Ted Benz pre-season meet averaging 20:00 for their top 5 on a slow muddy course.
16. Miami Country Day (11) No meet performances reported this past week as they prepre to open up their season at the Fort Myers Optimist Invitational on September 7.
17. Seacrest Country Day (13) Began the season competing in the Estero DDD Invitational. Seems to have held out some of the top returners from last season.
18. Westminster Academy (14) No meet performances this past week.  Top program with a strong 1-2.
19. Melbourne Central Catholic (NR) Finished 9th at the Harmony Invitational where the top 5 avereaged 20:29.
20.  Calvary Christian (Clearwater) (NR) Finished 2nd in the open division of the Holloway Park Jamboree averaging 20:31 through the top 5.

Individual Rankings:

Commentary: In the early season there is generally a lot of movement in the polls. Rest assured talent will rise to the top as the season progresses. It is often exciting though at the start to see some surprises and who put in the work over the summer. This years early season surprise include Patrick McNamara from Admiral Farragut Academy (2nd at the Holloway Park Jamboree) and Franco Martins from Windermere Prep (1st at the Mike Gibson Summertime Run) who both exploded out of the gates with great efforts this past week. The top spot on the poll though belongs to Holy Trinity's Junior Andrew Cacciatore who moves up from the 3rd spot with the fastest season opener (16:13) in 1A and the second fastest time in the State in winning the Wickham Park Jamboree. Good luck to all the teams over the next few weeks as we get a chance to see the early season work and progress begin to take shape.

Athlete Name, Grade – Team (Prev.)  Time, Comments:
1. Andrew Cacciatore, Junior - Holy Trinity (3) Cacciatore's opened up some eyes with his 16:13 season opener win at the Wickham Park Jamboree. Coach Butler called him "one of the most talented Juniors I have ever had".  Big summer has him ready early.
2. Troy Clark, Senior - Mount Dora Bible (2) Winning your season opener is always an enjoyable start to your Senior year as Clark captures the Deland Invitational in 16:50.
3. Griffith Rutherford, Senior - North Florida Christian (1) Opened up with a solid 17:14 second place finish at the Cougar XC Challenge. Big talent will be ready when it counts.
4. Patrick McNamara, Junior - Admiral Farragut Academy (13) A huge season opening 16:25 (0:30 PR) and second place finish at the Holloway Park Jamboree propels him all the way to number 4. We need to keep an eye on this one!
5. Nicholas Gonzalez, Junior - The Geneva School (4) Opening meet got rained out. Ran 16:30 in July 4 road race and is excited to get started at Katie Caples this week.
6. Joseph Janson, Senior - P.K. Younge (6) A 16:48  opener on the Sante Fe Region 2 course in winning the Bucholz Jamboree shows he is ready for a great season.
7. Trevor Kattenberg, Freshman - Holy Trinity (7) A 16:39 (PR) fourth place finish in his season opener at the Wickham Park Jamboree has this talented freshman on the early season rise
8. Ross Porter, Senior - Shorecrest Prep (5) No meets last week. Coming off an injury during the track season, Porter is eager to get started this week to test him fitness and progress.
9. Franco Martins, Junior - Windermere Prep (15) Opened with a 3 mile 15:50 win at the Mike Gibson Summertime Run.  Looks like a big improvement and could be the early season surprise.

2A Boys Rankings
By: Doug Nowlin, Pine Crest School, doug.nowlin@pinecrest.edu

Team Rankings:

Commentary: I have 16 teams ranked this week and they are almost exactly the same as last week.  I added McKeel because I never should have left them out.  Nine teams participated in races this weekend … but not really.  Lots of asterisks.  Some teams ran their JV teams, or only partial Varsity teams, and one of the races was less than 5k.  So I'm not going to adjust the team rankings this week.  I would like to recognize the Titusville Boys team who finished 2nd at the Wickham Park Jamboree with a team average of 17:21.  I'm confident they will make the rankings in my next poll.  Thank you for your understanding, and thank you for your e-mails about 2a teams and individuals.  Looking forward to this next weekend of racing.  I'll be at Katie Caples with my team.  If you can find me, hope you say hello.

  Team Name, Region (Prev.)  Comments:
1. Bishop Kenny, R1 (1) Bishop Kenny did not run their varsity runners in the Ridgeview Bob Hans Invitational.  Congratulations to other members of their team for stepping up and placing 5th out of 24 teams with an average of 18:22.
2. Trinity Prep, R2 (2) The Trinity Prep varsity runners were not able to get their race in before the thunderstorms hit at their season opening Twilight Meet.  However, the Trinity Prep JV team ran admirably and lost a tie breaker to Timber Creek to finish 2nd with an average of 20:14.
3. Immokalee, R3 (3) Immokalee ran at less-than-full strength in the Estero DDD Invitational finishing 5th with an average of 19:13.
4. Tampa Jesuit, R3 (4)
5. Ransom Everglades, R4 (5)
6. Berkeley Prep, R3 (6)
7. Nature Coast Tech, R2 (7)
8. Lake Highland Prep, R2 (8) Lake Highland Prep Boys finished 3rd at the Mike Gibson Run with a team average of 17:34.  The Meet Director has confirmed that the course was 3 miles (not 5k), so a future 5K team average will be used in the next rankings.
9. Bolles, R1 (9) Congratulations to the Bolles Boys for their 1st Place finish at the North Florida 110% Cross-Country Invitational.  Team average was 17:47.
10. McKeel Academy (NR) My apologies to the Boys of McKeel Academy.  I did not recognize that this team had moved up from 1a.  McKeel finished 7th at last years 1a State Championship with an average of 17:37 -- and all 7 boys are returning.  Welcome to 2a, McKeel !!
11. Pine Crest, R4 (10)
12. Bishop Moore, R2 (11) Bishop Moore Boys finished 5th at the Mike Gibson Run with a team average of 17:54.  The Meet Director has confirmed that the course was 3 miles (not 5k), so a future 5K team average will be used in the next rankings.
13. LaBelle, R3 (12) LaBelle Boys placed 13th at the Estero DDD Invitational with a team average of 20:56.  Haven't heard from them, but I'm guessing they were not at full-strength.
14. West Florida Tech, R1 (13)
15. Pensacola Catholic, R1 (14)
16. Key West, R4 (15)

Individual Rankings:

Commentary: I mentioned in my Pre-Season Poll that I hope to be fair -- so I've decided not to make any changes to the Individual Rankings this week.  Of the 25 ranked runners in 2a, only 5 competed in the first week.  I don't think it would be fair to adjust the rankings if most of the athletes (20/25) did not have an opportunity to prove themselves.  The 5 athletes who did run got the 2a action off to a great start!  I would also like to recognize Mason Jones, a Titusville Freshman who ran 16:48 at Wickham Park Jamboree, placing 6th.  I'm sure Mason will crack the top 25 in the next poll.  Thank you for your understanding, and thanks for the e-mails providing information about 2a runners and teams.

15. South Fork, R4 (NR) 3rd team from region 4 to make the rankings but it's still early
