In Her Own Words: Alexa Cruz - Grind Time

Hey Flrunners! I hope everyone's been doing well and feeling good. Even though this isn't my last blog, I just want to thank Flrunners for giving me the opportunity to blog this season. It's been such a fun and exciting experience. But anyways, there's been so much going on in the running world with regionals, state meet predictions, and obviously the most anticipated meet of the year: states. There's just so much to write about so I'll just get started!

Let's begin with regionals. This past weekend on November 1st, my team and I raced our 4A Region 4 meet at Larry and Penny Thompson Park. The sun was shining bright for all of the races, meaning it was  hot and our tan lines got even worse than they already were. My goal going into the meet was to win the meet as a team and to try to win it individually. I just tried to stay focused and not let my nerves get to me. Even though I didn't run my fastest, I was still happy with winning the meet as a team and individually. I was really proud of my girls for pushing it out there. I was also really happy for the boys who got second place. They've been working hard and looking real good. So regionals, despite being on a not-so-fast course, was still pretty good.

This past Wednesday my coach hosted a pasta dinner for the team. Let me tell you the food was delicious. The pasta was homemade, meaning my coach rolled out the dough and everything. Us girls helped to prepare the meal by making the garlic bread, salad, and pasta. The boys were outside doing who knows what, but right when they heard dinner was ready, they came rushing in. This is just one of the many perks of running cross country: team pasta dinners. Speaking of my teammates, I'm going to miss all of the seniors. This will actually be my last high school cross country race with my brother and the other senior boys and girls. It's been such a pleasure running with all these fantastic seniors. Christina, Marina, Ashley, Shannon, McSoley, Manny, Gabe Somarriba, Matt, Gabe, Joey, Manger, and my brother Antony I will miss you all. I love you all so much and know that you guys are gonna do great at States.

Now onto what everyone's really interested in, the state meet! This weekend all the top six teams who made it through their regions will be racing. It's time for everyone to show what they're made of. My team and I are ready to get out there and just run. All of us have been motivated and staying positive. We want to prove to everyone that we've got what it takes. It's every single runners time to defy the odds. Who cares what rankings say? In the end all that matters is you, your time, and your competitors. When you get on the line it won't matter whether you were ranked 8th or 67th, what will matter is the race. The second that gun goes off, all that will matter is you. Embrace the pressure, embrace the nervousness, and embrace the competition. As a wise runner once said, "People throughout life will try to tell you that you cannot do something, but if you truly believe you can do it, and you put in the work needed to achieve it: You can accomplish anything." Good luck to everyone out there! Run your hardest and never give up! It's grind time.

Happy Running!
