Tuesday on the six rubberized lanes of the Sebring High School track, a host of top Polk County teams will go head to head with the Blue Streaks. Here is how the events look to shape up.
Boys Distance
The 1600 and 3200 should be dominated up front by Eric Foster of Sebring. Foster enters with seed times commanding a 20 second premium over his nearest competitor in the 1600 (4:29.72) and 36 seconds better than his brother Damian Foster in the 3200m (10:09.96). Results are sparse for the Fosters this year, as Sebring rarely travels beyond the confines of the Heartland--an area notorious as a bit of a results black hole, despite it being the birthplace of flrunners.com.
Both of Eric's seed times come from personal bests from last track season. He has yet to have documented times anywhere near that range this season. But even if a little unpolished, he should have enough in the tank to win both rather easily.
Meanwhile the 800 meters is all Calahan Warren. The junior from Auburndale finished sixth at the FSU Relays with a time of 1:57.47. He also knocked down a 20th place 4:26 in the 1600 at FSU; however, he is not entered in that event on Tuesday. Last week Warren cruised to an 800m Polk County championship in 1:57.78. His clostest competitor in the 800 is Stephen Kretzer of Lake Gibson; the sophomore finished 4 seconds behind Warren in 2:01.90 at the Polk County Championship.
Boys Sprints
Bennie Wesley of Winter Haven is no doubt the favorite in both the 100m and 200m. The senior cruised to two easy victories last week at the Polk County Championship in both events (10.87 -1.9, 10.77 Prelims, 21.52 +.03). Wesley's personal best in the 100m, a 10.44 with legal wind, came almost a year ago at Golden South. But he's put up times of 10.58 and 21.37, respectively, this season.
Can anyone touch him? Unlikely. He disposed of most of his competitors last week at the County Championship.
The one wildcard here is Sebring's Brian Dixon. With Sebring's aforementioned lack of travel or results, we only have one meet on record for Dixon this season. He recorded two victories, with rather average looking times at a meet in Bartow a month ago. Last year though, Dixon improved significantly as the season wore on. He was completely new to the sport in 2013, not even knowing how to use blocks until mid March, and end up running a personal best of 21.25 (wind legal) at Golden South--and 4th place in the finals--and 10.89 in the 100m. Will we see that version of Dixon re-emerge for the state series? We'll find out.
If so, we could have an exciting 200m race between the two. Wesley will likely own the 100 no matter what, but the battle for the final regional qualifying spots between Dixon, Wilbur Cooper of Auburndale (10.88), Curtis Thomas of Auburndale (10.94), and Javon Harrison of Kathleen (10.94) could be fun!
One complication in that perspective 200m showdown, is Brian Dixon is looking to quadruple. He is entered in the 100m, 4x100m, 400m and 200m. I guess Sebring is looking for points to ensure a district team championship. He should have the talent and fitness to still qualify in his three individual events, but it may likely take the edge off of that 200m unless he takes the foot off the gas in the earlier events. That's just a lot of races, especially with the prelims in all four.
Dixon is seeded at 50.02 in the 400m, an event we have no documentation of him officially ever running. The favorite, however, will be Renestin St. Louis. The senior from Winter Haven enters with an identical seed time, but he is riding high off of the County Championship last week and will be much fresher than Dixon. Jerry compare of Auburndale was second at the County Championship and is seeded third in 50.68.
Boys Hurdles
Kyle Drollette of Lake Region is the far and away favorite to sweep both hurdles. He finished first in the 300H and third in the 110H at the Polk County Championship. No one who bettered him in that 110 though is in this district. He is looking to have about a full second of padding in the high hurdles (15.01) and almost time enough to change his spikes after the 300H (39.94).
Boys Relays
One thing Auburndale has going for it, especially in the sprints, is depth. They easily dispensed of 4x400 second seed Winter Haven at the county meet, so expect the same here. Auburndale was missing in the 4x100 results last week (perhaps a DQ in the prelims?), but they should be able to outpace second seed Kathleen. The Red Devils of Kathleen laid down a quick 42.78 in the season opening effort at the Kowboy Invitaitonal, but have been well off that since. Meanwhile the Aubunrdale Blood Hounds have been a consistent 42 second type team most of the season. They should take both.
The 4x800 on the other hand will be one of pure domination by Winter Haven. They should be able to jog mid 8:20s if they so pleased and still win the district title by 10 seconds over Lake Gibson and Sebring.
Girls Distance
The graduation of Sebring's duo of Taylor Tubbs, now a big time star at the University of Florida, and Hannah Schroeder (now at Bryan College) leaves a major vacuum of power in the district's girls distance events.
Lake Region's distance squad has jumped in to fill that void in the 1,600 and 3,200. They look all but certain to sweep the top three in both with Roxanna Caballero, Leah Jostes, and Geranise Dorce in the 1600 and Jostes, Caballero and Julia Soto in the 3,200. All but Soto are seniors, so look for another vacuum in 2015!
That distance dominance will be a bit interupted in the 800m though, with Ciera Baldwin (2:25) and Sophia Orellana (2:32) of Kathleen coming in as the top two seeds. Dorce, Michelle Mcfatridge (freshman of Lake Region), Makayla Groth (Auburndale, who will also contend for the third or fourth spot in the 1600), Savannah Walter (Lake Region), and Samantha Warren (Kathleen) all come in with seeds under 2:40, setting up a tight battle for the last two regional quailfying positions in what likely will be the most highly contested distance race of the night.
Girls Sprints
Courtney William of Auburndale and Robyn Griffin of Kathleen are setting up for some good highlight footage in both the 100 and 200. The two have traded off wins all year long, with William usually taking the 100 meters battles and Griffin superior at 200m.
In the 400 meters, could Kathleen really sweep the top four? That's the way the seed sheet reads! The nearest competitor is Estime Rit of Winter Haven; however, the fourth seed Brittnie Gunn of Kathleen beat out Ritt by .22 at last week's Championship (62.53 to 62.75), so a sweep is rather likely.
The top seeds are junior Shaniqua Stevens (60.42), freshman Terion Davis (60.58), and sophomore Ciera Baldwin (60.93).
Girls Relays
Once again the Polk County Championship serves as a good indicator. And in the 4x100 it was an epic battle and lean at the line with Auburndale nipping Kathleen 49.86 to 49.93. It should be another nail biter there!
Kathleen's 4x400 team dominated the county meet and their second place rival is in another district. So that really leaves Kathleen (4:00.32 seed) winning in a stroll over Auburndale.
Surprisingly, given Kathleen's likely 1-2 in the 800, they are looking at finishing second in the 4x800. Open 800 favorite Ciera Baldwin is not slated on the relay team, leaving Sophia Orellana and Samatha Warren to be the team's ringers. Lake Region will put together their muscle here with Caballero, Dorce, Jostes, and Mcfatridge seeded 12 seconds better: 10:25 to 10:37. The Lake Region Thunder was second to George Jenkins (not in this district) at Counties, with Kathleen fourth there. Auburndale is seeded just behind in third place with 11:39.

Boys Distance
The 1600 and 3200 should be dominated up front by Eric Foster of Sebring. Foster enters with seed times commanding a 20 second premium over his nearest competitor in the 1600 (4:29.72) and 36 seconds better than his brother Damian Foster in the 3200m (10:09.96). Results are sparse for the Fosters this year, as Sebring rarely travels beyond the confines of the Heartland--an area notorious as a bit of a results black hole, despite it being the birthplace of flrunners.com.
