THE NASON LINE: FLORIDA'S TOP ALL-TIME 3200/2 MILE RUNNERS
The Nason Line is named after 6 time state champion and former state record holder in both the mile and 2 mile, Jack Nason. Jack ran for Orlando Evans, graduating in 1968 and he would be the first runner in Florida distance running history to help bring the state out of the Dark Ages and into the modern era of running. No one before Jack Nason had ever run faster than 4:20 for a mile and 9:30 for 2 miles in the state of Florida. The list currently runs through the gauntlet from Brett Hoffman to Jack Nason and 158 runners strong to date. As time goes on, historical research will reveal some forgotten races from days gone and by those runners who will follow and join the list in the future. This past season we've had some great efforts with some new additions and big improvements.
Sukhi Khosla JR., was the leading returning 3200M runner from last year as a Sophomore and would improve so well that he became the 13th Florida Prep to crack the 9:00 barrier running a 8:59.50, at the FSU Relays, placing him in 12th place overall just ahead of arguably the greatest distance runner to ever come out of Florida, Keith Brantly #13 of Winter Haven! Khosla entered the season ranked #84 overall and now joins former Leon HS legends Herb Wills #8 & Matt Mizereck #6 making Leon the first school to have three runners under 9:00 in the 3200. Khosla is also coached Herb's younger brother Andrew Wills a great runner himself in his day. This, of course, places Khosla within reach of Brett Hoffman's long standing record of 8:49.91, which is a conversion of an 8:53.00 2 Mile that Brett ran in 1977. Sukhi would also take the 3A State Titles in the 1600 in 4:05.96 and the 3200 in 9:05.75, as well as being the 3A State Cross Country Champ.
Thomas Howell, SR. from Niceville was the other returning 3200m runner. Howell was able to move himself up to 55th all-time with a 9:11.07 finishing second to Khosla in the 3A State Meet! Thomas would move up from the #109 position! Thomas also ran 3 other races under the Nason Line at the Mobile Meet of Champions winning the 2 Mile in 9:20.36. He followed that up with a personal best at the FSU Relays finishing 3rd in 9:11.27. Finally running a 9:16.50 at the 3A Region 1 Meet taking 2nd to Khosla. Thomas will attend the University of Florida.
Kurt Convey joined the list this season as a junior with his run of 9:13.36 at the Florida Relays putting himself in 67th position on the Nason Line finishing 3rd in both the 1600 & 3200 at state. The other worthy note as Kurt became part of the first father/son duo to make the Nason Line. Kurt's father is Billy Convey also double's as Kurt's coach at Carol Reef currently holds the 5th spot on the list with an 8:54.38 a conversion of a 8:57.50 2 Mile. Billy also ranked 3rd on this list when he graduated in 1983.
Ryan Rodriguez a Belen Jesuit Prep junior would join the Nason Line by running a 9:15.49 at the FSU Relays placing himself in 82th on the list. Ryan would join Avery Lopez #46 and Elliott Clemente #61 making Belen Jesuit Prep the 13th team to have at least 3 runners on the list.
Franco Martins a junior from Windermere Prep also Coached by Gary Cohn #101 joined the Nason Line by running a 9:16.03 at the post season Holy Trinity All-Star meet and know is ranked #89 overall. Franco also capture the state 1A Title's in Cross Country and both the 1600 & 3200.
Tyler Bennett, a senior, the best distance runner out of Fort Myers since Clif Betts #117 in 1975, after spending a year on the Nason Line Honorable Mention List, would earn his introduction to the Nason Line at the 3A State Meet with a 9:16.50 finishing 3rd, now in #93 place all-time. Earlier in the season Tyler ran a 9:20.62 at the FSU Relays where he first broke the barrier. Tyler with attend University of North Florida.
Noah Kemp, SR., of St. Augustine would run a 9:17.05 at 3A State Meet, taking 4th, becoming the first runner to make this list from America's oldest city and now ranks #100 all-time is also a senior! The week before at 3A Region 1 he ran a 9:21.70 taking 3rd to break into the Nason Line. Noah will attend the University of Portland.
Mark Robertson, a senior from Booker T. Washington of Pensacola becomes the first runner to make the list west of Okaloosa County with a time of 9:18.27 and now sits at #116 overall. Mark also ran in that fast and well contested 3A State Meet race taking 5th! Mark broke into the Nason Line at the FSU Relays with a 9:20.04 in 6th and would run a 2 Mile in 9:24.07 at the Mobile Meet of Champions finishing in 4th. Mark will be attending the University of Mississippi.
Jake Poore of Land O'Lakes, a senior, was a huge surprise in making his mark in that tough 3A State Meet running a 9:18.66 taking 6th running about 17 seconds over his best previous run. By doing so Jake helps Land O' Lakes to be the 14th team to have 3 runners on the list and was the 2nd team to be so this season. Jake is now in #121 on the Nason Line. Jake will attend the University of Tampa.
Jack Guyton, a junior, from HB Plant would make the Nason Line in only his 5th time running a 3200, would win the 4A State Meet in a time of 9:20.35 moving him into #134 spot! Jack would also win the 4A 1600 in 4:11.86.
Andrew Llewellyn, a senior from Clearwater Countryside makes the list with run at the 4A State Meet of 9:22.27 placing 2nd, now at #154 all-time. Countryside becomes the 15th team ever and 3rd this season to have three members on Nason Line joining Brian Schmit & Roger Letchworth, who are ranked #51 & #52 respectively. Andrew will attend the University of Florida.
Finally with help of Herb Wills #8, we have discovered Jack Nason's fastest time was a 9:24 run sometime in March of 1968 moving Jack up into the 137th position. Also I'm proud to now be able to include Dunedin's great miler and former state champ & record holder at 4:10.4, Del Ramers #149, who ran a qualifying 9:24.90 at the Ocala Star-Banner Invitational in 1969! Del was joined by 16 other additional historical found runners over the last year!
The Standards:
· 9:22.52 at 3200 or 9:25.80 at 2 Miles or faster. This is based on Nason's 1968 2A State Meet Title time!
· Runner must attend a Florida High School as Freshmen, Sophomore, Junior & Senior (9-12)
· Post season runs for Seniors must occur before the end of July following Graduation.
· 3000 Meter conversions will not be considered for list, but will be footnoted.
· All running seasons to be included, when applicable.
The Structure:
· Placement on list based on times converted from 2 Mile to 3200, when applicable.
· All times will be expressed to the one hundredth, i.e. 9:00.00.
· Times posted will be each runners best know run to date.
· Two Mile time will be included to the right of the converted 3200 time posted.
· The year of the race was run is to the right of the posted time.
· The runners high school, year of graduation and hometown are shown.
· The meet in which the race & time were met, when known.
· Season: X=Cross Country, Between Seasons, Indoor & Outdoor Track, Championship & Post Season.
· When the runner is known to be in the Top Ten at Graduation, Placement is noted.
· State Titles will be listed for each runner also additional Honors if known.
· When "?" marks are use information is missing or unverified and should also be noted.
· Runners that attended more than one high school will be noted.

Brandon Marquez this summer finds time to run a great record setting AAU 3000M race in the 15/16 age division. Brandon would finish 50 seconds ahead of the next finisher in a race well done! However, the 3000M is not used to qualify for the Nason Line, but must be noticed in the Nason Line Honorable Mention List. Brandon will return next season and I would believe he is a sure shot to make the list with a 3200M or 2 Mile Race! Also note the he also set a record setting 1500 3:59.45 before it too.

James Zentmeyer & Adam Bradtmueller, Junior & Sophomore's respectively join Marquez in returning and taking another shot at the Nason Line!
Courtney Chambers would have made the Nason Line List had he run a qualifying 3200M or 2 Mile, but a quality 3000M run and per the guidelines set-up for the list, it warrants a mention ! Courtney was 6A State Champ at the Mile in 1997.
Scott Hans was 3A 1600 State Champion in 2004.
Eric Larson was 3A State Champ in XC in 2006 and 2 Mile in 2008, also note that in FHSAA records for the his 2 Mile run is listed incorrectly as Miami instead of Pensacola.

David Ortiz was 3A State Champ in XC in 1975.
Kevin Lyons was 2A State Champ at 3200M in 2003.
Doug Dickenson was 3A State Champ in XC, also the 2 Mile in 1986 & 1987.
