Heading into the 2013 cross country season, the Sarasota High School boy's cross country team thought they might be in a rebuilding year after losing a large senior class. However, juniors Zack Summerall and sophomore Adam Bratmueller stepped up in the leadership role and helped the Sailors finish 8th at the 3A Cross Country Finals. Summerall is back for a final hurrah after finishing third and Bradtmueller hopes to improve his 17th place finish. Only six of the top eighteen in arguably the most competive class return, making Summerall and Bradtmueller top five locks and a potent 1-2 punch. The main question mark for Coach John Stevenson will be how to replace the loss of Brandon Drumm, the team's number three runner. The back end of the line up will be a toss up between Cesar Pozas, Jordan Gonzalez, Reiner Escalona, and Brady Hill. Pozas is an incoming junior who join the track team in 2014 and will be new to cross country.
Both Summerall and Bradtmueller are coming off fantastic track seasons. Summerall focused mainly on the 800 and the 1,600m posting times of 1:55 (fifth at Florida Relays) and was seventh at the state meet. In the 1,600 he went 4:13.21 to finish third at the 3A state championship. His season didn't end there. Running in his last track season as a high schooler (due to his age), Summerall competed at the Golden South Classic where he won the mile and earned a ticket to the prestigious Adidas Dream Mile in New York City. Bradtmueller, who has a 5k personal best of 15:25.34, clocked times of 4:18.39 and 9:26.44 for 1,600 and 3,200m respectively.
The strength of this group is their work ethic and maturity. Stevenson says they have trained more consistently this year and are motivated to redeem themselves after last year's eighth place finish. The team rented a cabin this summer in the mountains of Georgia and North Carolina and went to Brevard Running camp where they enjoyed the hills, ice cold streams, and an incredible bonding experience. They call their trip "Camp Kenya". Running in one of the toughest classifications they will have to run like athletes in the east African nation. Chiles, Belen, and Leon should put on a show for the top spots, with Sarasota sitting back as the fourth best team.
Coach Stevenson Says...
"Our state goal is a crap shoot right now. Too many variables to consider a place. Anytime you have talents like Zack and Adam, we will always have a shot to place high and with their leadership this team can do some special things."
