XC Spotlight: Carlin Berryhill - Coral Reef

 
Coral Reef junior Carlin Berryhill is relatively new to the sport. 2013 was his first year running cross country and the Cuda standout finished 11th at the state meet. He is coming off a track season where he was 4th in the 1,600m with a time of 4:19.22 at the 4A state finals. His season best 9:30.69 was good enough for sixth in the 3,200m. Berryhill is looking to finish in the top ten and help guide Coral Reef to another podium finish. We get the scoop in our XC Spotlight.
 
How long have you been running and how did you get started?
 
I started running in the 7th grade for Herbert A. Ammons middle school. I was introduced to running by my basketball coach A.J. Sheppard. We would usually run a mile before practice and he was impressed with my times, so he spoke to the cross country coach Jorge Parra and from then on I have been running. 
 
Do you remember your first real race?
 
Yes, my first real race was at Larry and Penny Thompson park, I placed fourth.
 
How is your summer training going?
 
My summer training has been going really well and I'm feeling good. I have been averaging around 50-55 miles per week
 
What is your favorite workout? 
.
My favorite workout is a mile to two mile repeats.
 
Which meets will you be running in this year?
 
I will be running locally at Larry and Penny Thompson meets and out of town in the Katie Caples, Saucony, Fleet Feet, Pre-States and hopefully state meets.
 
Do you have a favorite course? What do you think is the toughest course in the state? 
 
My favorite course is Spanish River and by far the toughest course in my opinion is the Larry and Penny Thompson course.
 
Out of all your running accomplishments so far, which stands out the most?
 
What stands out to me the most is placing 4th in the state meet in the mile for the 2013 4A championship after the previous of having a mishap prior to the race. In addition to this, placing second in the state as a team for cross country my first year running in high school.
 
What are your goals for the upcoming cross country season?
 
My goal is to be a state champion and break 15:20.
 
What do you love most about running?
 
I love the ompetition and training with my training partner Kurt Convey and my teammates.

Do you have any pre-race rituals or routines?
 
I always eat pasta the night before the race, drink plenty of water, stretch before I go to bed, listen to music, and kneel to pray before a race.
 
What is your favorite food?

My favorite food is shrimp alfredo.

What was the last movie you saw and what did you think of it?

The last movie I saw was The Purge: Anarchy. It was very gruesome.
 
What brand of shoes do you train/race in?

I train in Mizunos. On rocky courses I race in Nike Waffles and on flat courses I race in Nike Victory spikes.

What professional athlete would you like to meet the most?
 
I would like to meet Lebron James and Bernard Lagat.
 
What is something most people don't know about you? 
 
Something most people don't know about me is that I played football my freshmen year instead of running cross country. 
 
Lastly, if you were stranded on an island with three things what would they be? 
 
If I were stranded on a island the the three things I would bring are food and water for survival and running shoes to run away from wild animals.
