In Her Own Words: Alexa Cruz - Big Business In Tallahassee

Hey Flrunners! I hope everyone has been having fun and training hard. Based on the results I’ve seen, it’s going to be a very exciting and competitive state meet. haven’t blogged in a while, so there’s a lot I’ve got to talk about and recap on. Let’s get started!

Well first, I’d just like to give a little recap on how all my races (countys, districts, and regionals) have gone. Countys was a long way’s back, but it went well. We, the varsity girls’ team, placed first and almost had a perfect sweep. The varsity boys’ team got second, or so we thought at the time. Their score was wrong and needed to be recounted. They actually ended up winning by a point! Everyone was so excited when they found out the news. Then came districts. We were all super pumped because this was the first meet of the championship series. The girls’ and boy’s teams both placed first. We, the girls, had all of our top seven runners in the top 10. The boys had a perfect top 7 sweep. It was a great day to be a Raider and we were all excited to race regionals and even more excited for STATES!

Regionals was about a week and a half ago, at the infamous Larry and Penny Thompson Park. We were greeted by the familiar Miami weather (which actually was pretty good, well for Miami anyways) and the coral-covered ground. My goals into the race were to better my time from the last time I raced here and to win the meet, as a team and individually. The gun went off and everything else faded away. It was now just us, our competitors, and the course. We won as a team, and I was able to better my time by about 30 seconds and win as an individual. The boys battled it out and finished second, just missing first place by two points. It was an extremely competitive race, but just served as motivation for the boys. Deja vú? Congratulations to all the individuals and teams that made it to States! To all the other teams and individuals that didn’t make it, remember there’s always next season and track to get stronger!!

Now, the day has finally come. The day everyone talks about all season. The day everyone sets goals for. It’s the State Meet. States is where miracles happen, where the underdogs rise, where there are upsets, where everyone proves why they deserve to be there, where the PRs are many, and where hard work beats talent. All that matters is YOU and your team! As soon as the gun goes off, forget about everything that you’ve been worried about, forget about your nerves, forget about rankings and just run. Run the race for yourself. Think positive and never stop believing in what you can do. Believe and trust in all the hard work that you’ve done all season. Think about those countless workouts, mile repeats, long runs, crammed weekends, long nights, team dinners, and early morning practices. Think of all the goals you’ve set for yourself. Run the first mile with your legs, the second with your mind, the third with your heart, and the last .1 with guts. Here’s a quote that I find very inspirational, “Find that strength somewhere in you, where only your mind will make your legs go faster.” Everyone go out there and run hard and have fun! Good Luck to everyone competing and I’ll see you all on the course!

Happy Running!
