St. Thomas Aquinas senior Alexa Cruz will be one of the top runners in this weekend's FSU Invitational/Pre-State. The 2013 4A Cross Country Finals champion is going up against a stacked field, but she is coming in relaxed. Cruz, who also won the 2014 state track championship at 3,200m, recently ended her college recruitment with a commitment to the University of Alabama Crimson Tide. We caught up with her to talk about the decision.
What was the recruiting process like for you?
The recruiting process was bit stressful, but very exciting. I got the chance to meet some great coaches and some amazing runners. Overall, it was a great experience and I'm so blessed to have been able to go through it.
Where all did you consider/visit?
I also visited the University of Kentucky and Oklahoma State University. I was going to visit two more schools, but I just felt that Alabama was the perfect fit for me.
Describe the factors that went into picking the Crimson Tide?
There are so many reasons why I chose Alabama, but some of the main reasons why I did are:
-The experienced and very knowledgable coaching staff. Coach Tribble, the Women's XC and distance coach, was so down to earth and extremely helpful throughout the whole process. Coach Waters, the head coach, was also very helpful and enthusiastic.
-The team. I loved the overall team atmosphere that Alabama has. I liked how close the girls were and how they all motivated one another. On my visit, I felt so welcomed and as if I was on the team.
-The university's excellent academics. Academics is the primary reason everyone goes to college, so it was very important for me to go to a school with good program in what I'd like to major in (which is chemistry by the way).
-The amazing school spirit and pride. I love how current students and alumni talk so passionately about the university. This was something that really drew me to the university.
How important was it seeing the other Florida girls on the team like Katelyn Greenleaf, Emily Edwards, and Caroline Barlow?
It was so relieving and very cool to see some Florida girls at Alabama. It helped to show how much improvement they've made over the past couple of years. I also knew that they'd probably take me under their wing if I went there. They're all so sweet and caring. Plus, I figured it would also help me if I was ever feeling a little homesick.
Deciding early in your senior season must be a big relief. Now you can focus on the postseason and upcoming track season.
I'm so glad and SO relieved that I've committed. Though the recruiting process is interesting and very fun, it can also be stressful when you put senior year, ACT/SAT, school, and running into the mix. Now that I've made my decision, I'm feeling more relaxed and more motivated to do even better this season.
What are your goals for the rest of the season?
I've got a few goals for the rest of the season. I really want to PR and run in the 17:20-30s by the end of the season. I also would like to be a state champion and make it to nationals. Team wise, the girls and I are looking to be on that podium again. We're a young team, but we're all real motivated for the season.
Looking forward to college, what are you excited for the most about the University of Alabama?
I'm so excited to just go to college and meet so many new people. I also can't wait to be on the team and just experience the rich tradition that Alabama has to offer.
