In Her Own Words: Lindsay Tomaini: The Passion To Persevere

Perseverance means, by definition, the steady persistence to achieve a goal despite obstacles.

I would say that most runners at some point need to focus on their perseverance. We regroup after a race that may not have gone our way or dig deep mid race when we know it can.

I wasn't happy with my performance at the UF Mountain Dew invitational. I had never run the course and I had wanted to run a season best. I knew half way through the race that it was not happening. I dug for that extra gear, competing to the end, but couldn't reach my ultimate goal. It is easy to become discouraged when things don't go your way. The secret is to take a deep breath and remember that the windshield is bigger than the rear view mirror for a reason.

We are supposed to look forward. Not backwards. We are supposed to persevere and, we are supposed to keep trying.

I was pumped up for the flrunners.com Invitational. I wanted to persevere. I felt good on the course and knew I was having a good race. I am trying to run a smart cross season and keep my legs under me through States and the Footlocker Regionals. It was a good day followed by a great weekend at a special place. I was off to one of my scheduled official visits and it was a very enlightening and exciting trip. I met with a great coach who I could see myself competing for some day. There was confirmation that continued hard work, long hours, countless miles, and all of the sweat will pay off in making my dreams come true.

As I came into this week, I looked forward to Pre-State at FSU. I felt I was on a positive trajectory and I was ready to capitalize on the momentum. It turns out I could not make the trip due to a family health issue. While I was upset I would not be at the race, it occurred to me that it was perhaps a larger life lesson in disguise. Things happen. Plans change. If I look at it in a positive light, there is a bigger message. If my grandma could push forward and fight, so could I. So will I. I am excited to see how my perseverance pays off. I am excited to see how my season ends up. I am excited to have the ability and the heart to keep pushing forward.
