Salute To Seniors: Angelic Powell - Boynton Beach Community High School

The 2015-2016 school year has provided some great highlights in both cross country and track across the Sunshine State. In the coming weeks many of our seniors will head out to start their college careers both athletically and academically. We wanted to salute them one more time in this special feature and say thank you for your support over the years.

Flrunners.com:  What was your most memorable race/moment?

Angelic Powell: This year winning the conference championship in the long jump and the triple jump.

FLR: Who would you consider your biggest competition over your four years?

AP: Competing against Ivanna Ford and Stacy Destin in the long jump. We all ran youth track together since I was 11 years old.

FLR: What was your greatest accomplishment?

AP: My greatest accomplishment was earning a scholarship from Wagner College in Staten Island, NY.

FLR: If you could do it all over again what would you change about your running career in high school?

AP: If I had to change one thing it would be to focus all my attention to track and field for the entire four years of high school instead just the last two years.

FLR: What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?

AP: The most difficult thing I had to overcome is believing that I could attend college on a track scholarship. I didn't overcome that fear until the conference track meet when I jumped 18 feet.

FLR: What will you miss the most?

AP: I will miss the relationship that I developed over the years. The coaches that trained me during my four years. Coach B telling me Angelic you need to "dorsiflex". My father saying the game isn't based on "sympathy".

FLR: What advice you would give to younger athletes?

AP: I would tell them that your freshman year is your most important year as it relates to your grades. If you can finish freshman year with at least a "B" average, you are on your way to getting a scholarship in track and field because academics bridge the financial gap in track and field,

FLR: What influence has your coach had with respect to your performance and overall life goals?

AP: There have been several coaches who were instrumental in my youth and high school career. My first and most important coach was my father.  He pushed me and encouraged me to be a competitor. My father always said employers like hiring athletes because of their competitive nature. I just started my first job and I must say what my father said is true, employers like competitive people.  The next coach I want to acknowledge is coach Clyde Harris. Coach Harris always believed I had the talent to get a track scholarship, even when I wasn't so sure myself. I can hear Coach Harris now, Angelic just keeping working hard, keep up your grades and listening to your father and you will get that scholarship. Coach Harris you were right and for that I will always "love you". I also, would like to thank Coach Bayardo Sinclair for putting up with my drama. I know I had my days, but you stayed on top of me with my long jump and running your figure 8's.

FLR: What are your college plans?

AP: I will be attending Wagner College in Staten I Island, New York on a track scholarship.

FLR: Who would you like to say thank you to?

AP:would like to say thanks to my mom for allowing me to travel across the country to compete. I'd also like to thanks Coach Derek Walker for having patience and taking the time to teach me the triple jump. I can hear you now Coach Walker, "Angelic you have to hold your phase longer." I'm still working on it coach. I can't forget Coach Howard as well who has been there since I was 12 years old.

FLR: Is there anything else you'd like to add?

AP: I want to say to the seniors of 2017 that if you have not started, please complete as many questionnaires as you can. It only takes one coach to say we like you and offer you a scholarship. Also, take the SAT or the ACT as many times as you can. The higher your score is the greater your chances are in getting a scholarship.
