Starting in the 2017 high school track and field season, a runner who helps another competitor--either ill or injured--will no longer be disqualified, as long as medical assistance is not available or nearby. The National Federation of State High School (NFHS) board of directors approved this rule change during its June 13-15 meeting in Indianapolis. Becky Oakes, NFHS director of sports and liaison to the Track and Field Rules Committee, said the committee did not want athletes receiving penalties for acts of good sportsmanship.
