Father Lopez alumnus , Alan "AJ" McFarland, was the 2014 1A Discus state champion, throwing 51.13m and sixth place state medalist in the Shot Put throwing 14.32m.

Six years later, McFarland is vying for an NCAA title.

Here's the thing, McFarland was an undiscovered recruit entering his senior year. In fact, McFarland didn't start throwing till his sophomore year when Coach Sue O'Malley of Father Lopez asked him to throw for the team.

After great success McFarland caught the eye of many small colleges in his senior season, but McFarland had his heart set on the University of Florida. He wanted to be a gator. So, he cold called the University of Florida and the rest is history.
