While many athletes were finishing up their district meets and gearing up for region this weekend, a few of Florida's finest competed internationally at the Carifta Games in the Cayman Islands. Here are a few story lines from the weekend.
Briana Williams Runs U20 World Lead
Briana Williams had a stellar performance in both the 100m and 200m at the Carifta Games, winning both events in 11.25 (0.3) and 22.89 (0.9) for Jamaica.
In the 100m, Williams cruised out of the blocks to win by a huge margin, setting a new Carifta 17 meet record.
Williams was not done with just one outstanding performance, the high school junior doubled back to run the world's third fastest 200m time in 2019 and a world-leading under 20 performance to cap off the weekend.
Curtis Brothers Dominate U17 and U20 1500m Races
The Curtis brothers represented the Bahamas very well this weekend in the 1500m races.
Mount Dora Christian sophomore,
Mitchell Curtis, took the under 17 boys 1500m title in a smoking PR of 4:09.24 -- an excellent performance for the 4:30 1600m athlete. Curtis has had breakthrough season this year with a new PR of 2:01 in the 800m and 4:34.38 in the 1600m. The week prior to the Carifta games, Curtis finished fourth in the 1600m at the FHSAA 1A District 9 meet to qualify for the FHSAA 1A Region 3 meet on April 27.
Older brother and Mount Dora Christian senior,
Gabriel Curtis, went home with a bronze medal for the Bahamas in the boys under 20 1500m race. Curtis finished in a PR of 3:58.11 -- an excellent accomplishment for the FSU signee. Curtis won both the 800m and 1600m at the FHSAA 1A District 9 meet and finished second in the 3200m as he will pursue the distance triple at the FHSAA 1A Region 3 meet and the State Finals come May 3.
