Westside Hurdlers Eclipse National Record

Breaking the meet record in the 4x55 hurdle relay at the Nike Indoor Championships, that took place from March 13-14 in Landover, MD was just a start for Westside's boy's team as they broke the two-year old record.

Brandon Brown, Dennis Martin, Martez Brown and Mauricus Brown were the group of four from Westside that set the new NIC mark of 29.45. The previous mark of 30.20, was set in 2002 by Wayne High School of Huber Heights, OH.

The Westside girl's 4x55 shuttle relay team of Polly Hardy, Holly Hardy, Nyoka Norman, Kayla Perry and Brandi Myers made up the fifth place finishers at the NIC. The relay squad finished in 35.21.

This past weekend Westside's shuttle hurdle relay squad of Martin (13.77), Brandon Brown (13.66), Martez Brown (14.03) and Mauricus Brown (14.40) set a new shuttle hurdle national record at the Eastern Relay Invitational in Willingboro, NJ this past weekend with a 56.32 mark. The old mark of 56.51 was held by Wolfson (Jacksonville, Fla.) since 1996.

Westside's team also performed well this year in state at the State Track and Field Championships the weekend of May 7-8. The girls dominated the 4A 400 hurdles with Nyoka Norman taking home the win in 1:02.29. Teammates Polly Hardy and Holly Hardy finished third and sixth, respectively in the 400 hurdles.

Westside boys took one, two and three in the 110 meter hurdles event at the state meet that took place from May 7-8 at Spring Valley High School. Brandon Brown (14.29), Dennis Martin (14.31) and Martez Brown (14.45) were the Westside finishers. Martin of Westside sealed the 400 hurdles win in 53.26 seconds. Westside's Brandon Brown dominated in the long jump with a 23-07.00 best, one-inch longer than second place finisher Dominick Bailey (Ridge View).

The Westside boys finished second at the state championships with 92 points, 1.5 points behind team champion Ridgeview. The girls also finished second, with Northwestern placing first in the 4A team standings.

Brandon Brown (hurdles/jumps), Brandon Ellis (sprints) and Holly Hardy (hurdles/cross-country) will attend Wallace State JUCO next fall. Martez Brown (hurdles/high jump) and Nyoka Norman (hurdles) will attend UNC Chapel Hill and Polly Hardy (hurdles) will be attending Clemson.
