Skyler Franklin 53.48 400/11.59 100 In Last Chance Double

Western freshman sprint sensation Skyler Franklin tuned up for championship season in Florida in impressive fashion at the Flying L Last Chance Meet in Coral Springs as the state leader and US No. 2 ranked at 400 meters ran just off her best time of 53.37 in the event with a 53.48 performance this weekend.

Franklin is the fourth fastest freshmen all-time in Florida high school history in the event with the class state record belong to Robin Reynolds of Miami Jackson at 52.15 from 2009.

Franklin also showed off her range in the shorter sprints by clocking a personal best and wind-legal US No. 15 effort of 11.59 to win the 100 meter dash, which ranks fifth fastest in Florida high school history among all freshmen.

With Western High School being in the 4A classification, Franklin currently stands as the favorite in the 400 meter dash despite a strong group of girls in her classification including another freshmen standout and Florida Relays champion Nakira Hudson from Dr. Phillips.

With her recent 100 meter performance as well as having already run 23.38 in the 200 this spring, the more intriguing question is if she will attempt the sprint triple in the state championship series with great competition found in those events as well for 4A including the likes of the Miami Southridge duo Cynteria James and Somiyah Braggs as well as East Lake senior Sophie Haag and Palm Harbor University sophomore Rachael Uvieghara both out of Pinellas County.

An age group star growing up that has won numerous AAU Junior Olympic titles and earned a pair of All-American honors indoors this past March at Nike Indoor Nationals, Franklin will certainly be seeking the first of likely many future high school state titles next month in Jacksonville for the FHSAA 4A State Championships.
