During halftime of the Holy Trinity Episcopal Football game against Masters Academy, a rather enthusiastic Tiger crowd witnessed their first 2 Mile Postal event. Looking fresh on a cool, mostly breezeless night in Melbourne, Bryan Sharkey blazed to a full 2 Mile PR clocking 9:25.34 or a 9:22.06 3200 equivalent.
He was joined by 10 other harriers as each one tried to run fast in preparation for upcoming District, Regional and State meets. With pace setter Jim VanVeen formerly of Coach Braman's Florida State mens squad leading him through the mile in 4:41, Bryan's gutsy second mile performance had the fans standing and cheering the entire time on his stated quest to go sub 9:20. Although he didn't go sub 9:20, Bryan set a Holy Trinity Track record and lowered his PR by 5 seconds.
After getting to know the Tiger runners and Coach Butler over the last year when he first ran Coach B's 24 hour relay fundraiser and traveling to the Nike Camp with several local runners from the Melbourne area, Bryan decided to make the trek up from Miami to headline Holy Trinity's first ever Postal. Also making the trip north for the Postal from Gulliver Prep was Mario Bojorquez, and Lincoln Park Academy Greyhounds, Matt Hensley, Jeff Hensley, and Chris Fulcher. Several runners from Edgewood also made the trip over for the two earlier postal events that were run prior to the start of the Football game.
When asked his thoughts after the race on the atmosphere at Holy Trinity for a fast 2 Mile Postal, Bryan said the cheering fans, cheerleaders, Tiger Band and the stride by stride announcer J, really got him pumped during the event !
Also posting a sub 10 minute performance was Matt Hensley, last week's winner of the HTA Fall Classic. All in all, it was a great event on a picture perfect night that saw multiple PR's go by the wayside and the Holy Trinity football team in a romp over Masters academy, 61-27.
