TAMPA – Chamberlain’s top two runners dominated the field at the Central Hillsborough Invitational on Tuesday. They ran in tandem and didn’t even come close to their best times, but all that mattered was getting the win.
Max del Monte beat out teammate and close friend Jake Covington with times of 16:42 and 16:43, but they actually ran faster times last Friday on a slower course at the FACA meet that featured runners from all over the state. The conditions were extremely muddy that night, but del Monte and Covington were simply trying to win Tuesday’s race at King High School rather than trying to set new marks. Chamberlain is hoping the win will earn them consideration for an invitation to join the Elite "Race of Champions" Division at next month’s flrunners.com Invitational in Titusville.
“We pushed each other pretty hard, but we were kind of beat after last Friday. We have another big race next week, so just winning as a team was enough,’’ Covington said.
