Seminole Athletic Conference Coverage

It was a hot humid Wednesday afternoon at Central Winds Park in Winter Springs, the site of the Seminole Athletic Conference Championships.

The three lap, 3.1 mile course saw runners cross flat terrain as well as narrow pathways along scenic Lake Jesup. The afternoon start and  heat might be common in Florida, but not common to those used to starting meets at 7 a.m.  Hagerty, however, was ready to go sweeping all four team championships.

In girls varsity action, Hagerty sophomore Bryce  Seymour took an early lead, with teammate Amy Ankli, Winter Spring’s Kristen Yocum, and Lake Howell’s Regan Farrow rounding out the top four.  Heading into the woods, it seemed to be a three person race with Ankli dropping back. After two miles, Farrow picked up the pace and brought it home finishing in 20:06.81. Seymour and Yocum rounded out the top three,

The boys race had some twists and turns and we’re not just talking on the course.  Early on it was a trio of Timothy Nguyen, Otneil Teixeira, and  Peter Licari out front, but it was Nguyen who was the leader at the one mile mark. Winter Springs would finish first, second and third. However, the depth of  Hagerty led by Licari’s fifth place finish, propelled the Huskies to the team championship by just one point.

In junior varsity action, the girls headed off a minute before the boys, in a race that saw both on the course at the same time.  Hagerty freshman Haley Albers took first in a time of 22:09.79 in the girls race, while senior Colin Tardrew  continued the Huskie’s winning ways with a time of 18:45.60 for the boy’s championship.

Overall, a great night of running and some great battles between Seminole counties top teams. The squads will now turn their attention to the post season  with districts, regionals, and the state meet right around the corner.
