MileSplit is an international network of regional affiliate web sites and national portals covering the sports of cross country running and track & field. Our primary focus is on the high school market, but we also feature some middle school, college, professional and general interest stories.
We have the second-highest traffic of any running-specific web site in the United States, second only to Rodale’s Runners’ World Magazine. During a thirty day period between April and May 2011 we topped 22 million page views and 850,000 unique visitors.
While our affiliates and network of freelancers extend all around the country, our newly-opened corporate headquarters is based on the sixth floor of the Sanlando Center and is conveniently located near the intersection of I-4 and State Road 434 in Longwood, Florida.
Our content spans all types of new media from written to videos to photos. We have a wide variety of opportunities to gain experience based on interest. On-site coverage at cross country and track & field meets is a large part of our content during the season. We pride ourselves in being technology-forward and like to try new things. We often conduct interviews via Skype. Our video production studio includes two sets, non-linear editing suite, lighting, and equipment. Interns can build their portfolio by writing stories, health and nutrition pieces with medical professionals, video packages, photo journalism, etc.
Also of interest to potential interns is our partnership with Universal Sports, a partially-owned subsidiary of NBC/Universal (now Comcast). They serve as our national sales team, with exclusive rights on all of our national advertising. We regularly converse with their team--as well as the NBC Sports Group--to work on campaign ideas and cross-promotions. Our work is also regularly featured on their online properties.
General Internship Duties
All work will be under supervision and to an agreed work assignment. The duties can often be crafted and fine-tuned based on the specific area of journalism the intern is interested in.
- Researching for more in-depth stories on the Internet, handbooks, industry magazines, media guides, and interviews.
- Creating original feature stories, interviews, meet summaries, nutrition/training articles, etc.
- Helping with on-site coverage at meets, which may include photography, videography, conducting interviews, doing stand-ups, creating highlights/summary articles, and editing video packages from the content.
- Script writing for in-studio highlights show.
- Updating the site with statistics, breaking news, and other athlete or team related data.
- Camera work, editing work, or even being an on-camera personality for highlights shows and interviews conducted in our studio, on the Seminole-Wekiva Trail (just behind our office building) or on location.
- Helping with our social media efforts for communication with our audience via Facebook, Twitter, Google+, or the latest social flavor of the month!
- Open to new ideas and evolving trends in new media, which may include interviews via Skype, Google+ Huddles, or chat/social network instant messaging.
Interested in the internship?
This position is only available to individuals in the Orlando, Florida metro area that will be able to work out of our office (as well as on location at metro area venues). Our ideal candidate is a college student majoring in a field of mass communications, especially with interest in a career in sports journalism. However, we are open to other applicants that would like to gain experience, build portfolio, and help serve our vibrant and loyal community of running enthusiasts.
