How do you compare runners from different eras? It's certainly one of the most timeless debates in the history of running. It's no different when it comes to Florida high school cross country history. Who is the Greatest girls' high school cross country runner in Florida history? When determining the Greatest of All Time (GOAT) in Florida high school girls' cross country, times tell only part of the story. Personal bests, course records, and championship performances all matter, but they exist within the context of their era.
Cross country has changed dramatically over the decades. Courses have evolved, race distances and championship venues have changed, and advances in footwear technology have transformed performance. Training methods have become more sophisticated, with a far greater understanding of biomechanics, sports science, nutrition, injury prevention, and recovery. Today's athletes also benefit from a deeper pool of experienced coaches and year-round competition. Even the national championship landscape has shifted from Foot Locker to NXN and Brooks.
That's why building an all-time list requires more than comparing times. A fast 5K is certainly part of the conversation, but greatness is defined by much more than a fast PR. Championships won, consistency over multiple seasons, dominance against elite competition, performances on the national stages, historical impact on Florida distance running, and the ability to excel within the competitive landscape of a runner's era all deserve equal consideration.
With these criteria in mind, and based upon the historical data of Florida's most storied girls' distance runners, here arguably is a definitive Top 10 ranking of the greatest girls' cross country runners in Florida high school history. And, for fun, we added a 5K cross country Fantasy Race of these Florida legends in their high school prime to see who would win.
(Note: post-high-school careers were not considered in the criteria. Priority was given to athletes who have won four and three individual state championships.)
1. Ashley Brasovan (Wellington HS) 2009
The Resume:
2007 Foot Locker National Champion (17:20.00)
2008 Foot Locker National Runner-Up (17:25.00)
4-Time 4A State Champion (2005, 2006, 2007, 2008)
Personal Best: 16:41.42
Why She is the GOAT: There may never be another résumé quite like Ashley Brasovan's. Brasovan is the undisputed queen of Florida cross country. She is the only Florida girl to ever win a true, undisputed national cross country title, taking the crown at Foot Locker Nationals in San Diego in 2007, and nearly repeating with a runner-up finish in 2008. Brasovan also pulled off the rare "four-peat" at the state level, sweeping the 4A state titles all four years of high school. Add in her personal best of 16:41.42 in 2006, and her resume is completely unmatched. She was decades ahead of her time, before today's racing shoes arrived.

2. Jennifer(Barringer) Simpson (Oviedo High School) 2005
The Resume:
3rd at Foot Locker Nationals (2003)
10th at Foot Locker Nationals (2004)
3-Time 4A State Champion (2002, 2003, 2004)
Personal Best: 16:55.00
Why She is #2: Before she was an Olympic Medalist and World Champion on the track, Jennifer Simpson was one of Florida's greatest high school runners. She swept three consecutive 4A state titles while emerging as one of the country's premier distance athletes. Her resume shines brightest on the national stage. Her 3rd place finish at Foot Locker Nationals in 2003 stood for years as one of the greatest national performances ever by a Florida girl, and she backed it up with another Top-10 finish as a senior.
Her high school résumé foreshadowed one of the most decorated professional careers in American distance running.

3. Caroline Wells (Winter Springs HS) 2022
The Resume:
10th at Eastbay (Foot Locker) Nationals (2021)
2-Time 3A State Champion (2020, 2021)
Florida 5K State Record Holder (16:40.20)
Why She is #3: If this list were based purely on time, Wells would be at the very top. She completely rewrote the Florida record books, clocking a 16:40.20 at the Hagerty Invitational and dominating the tough Apalachee Regional Park course with a 16:55.06 at the state meet. She capped off her flawless 2021 season with a 10th-place All-American finish at Eastbay Nationals. Her margin of victory over her peers in 2020 and 2021 demonstrated her dominant talent.
4. Betty Jo Springs (Bayshore HS) 1979
The Resume:
4-Time State Champion (1975, 1976, 1977, 1978)
Distances Raced: 1.5-mile & 2-mile
Why She is #4: You cannot have a GOAT list without honoring the original trailblazer. Betty Jo Springs achieved legendary status long before the existence of Foot Locker Nationals or the standardized 5K distance. Every era has its pioneers, and Betty Jo Springs was Florida's original cross-country superstar. She won four consecutive state titles from 1975 to 1978, setting state records at the 1.5-mile and 2-mile distances before the sport standardized on the 5K distance
She was virtually untouchable in the state of Florida and laid the foundation for every female distance runner who followed.

5. Kayla Hale (Holy Trinity Academy) 2009
The Resume:
4-Time 1A State Champion (2005, 2006, 2007, 2008)
3-Time Foot Locker National Qualifier (21st in 2006, 32nd in 2008)
Personal Best: 16:56.00
Why She is #5: Few runners matched Kayla Hale's consistency. During the same four-year stretch that Brasovan dominated Class 4A, Hale was doing the exact same thing in Class 1A, collecting four consecutive state championships. More impressively, Hale was a three-time Foot Locker National qualifier; year after year, she proved she belonged among the nation's elite.

6. Tsion Yared (Pine Crest) 2010
The Resume:
4-Time 2A State Champion (2014, 2017, 2018, 2019)
3-Time Nike Cross Nationals (NXN) Qualifier (23rd in 2018)
Personal Best: 17:20.91
Why She is #6: Yared's longevity and range are noteworthy. Longevity separates Tsion Yared from nearly everyone else on this list. She burst onto the scene by winning her first 2A State Championship in 2014 as a seventh-grader. She then added three more consecutive titles during high school in 2017, 2018, and 2019. Qualifying for NXN three times and finishing 23rd in 2018 showcases her immense national-level talent and success. Few athletes have sustained excellence across such a long span.
7. Caroline Annis (Plant) 1998
The Resume:
4-Time State Champion (1994, 1995, 1996, 1997)
2-Time Foot Locker National Qualifier (19th in 1997, 28th in 1996)
Why She is #7: Annis owned the Florida cross country scene in the mid-1990s, capturing four consecutive state titles during the era of the 2-mile and 3-mile courses. Earning a ticket to San Diego for Foot Locker Nationals twice solidifies her as one of the elite competitors in state history.
8. Christa Benton (Keswick Christian) 2001
The Resume:
3-Time State Champion (1997, 1999, 2000) & State Runner-Up (1998)
2-Time Foot Locker National Finalist (12th in 2000, 25th in 1999)
Personal Best: 16:55.00
Why She is #8: Benton was nearly a four-time state champion. Instead, she finished with three titles, one runner-up finish, and capped her career with an outstanding 12th-place finish at Foot Locker Nationals in 2000, cementing her status as an All-American. She remains one of Florida's premier runners from the turn of the century.

9. Bridget Blake (Dr. Phillips HS) 2012
The Resume:
3-Time 4A State Champion (2010, 2011, 2012)
2-Time Foot Locker National Finalist (15th in 2012, 38th in 2011)
Why She is #9: Dominating the 4A or any classification is no easy task, but Blake made it look routine with three straight titles. She peaked perfectly during her senior year, finishing 15th at Foot Locker Nationals and earning All-American honors.

Bailey Hertenstein 2018 4A State XC Championship
10. Bailey Hertenstein (Newsome) 2018
The Resume:
3-Time 4A State Champion (2015, 2016, 2017)
Foot Locker National Qualifier (20th in 2016)
Personal Best: 17:30.00
Why She is #10: For three years, Bailey Hertenstein was a tactical master, winning three straight titles in 4A and putting together an incredible undefeated streak against in-state competition. Her 20th-place finish at Foot Locker Nationals in 2016 caps off a stellar resume. Bailey Hertenstein built one of the most impressive winning streaks in modern Florida cross country history, consistently finding ways to win championship races, regardless of pace or conditions.
What if every Florida legend lined up together in her high school prime?
If we lined up these Florida legends for a 5K Cross Country race "today," for an Ultimate Fantasy Race of everyone in their high school prime, who would win?
Here is how the race may play out:
The Winner: Ashley Brasovan
The Runner-Up: Caroline Wells
Why Brasovan wins: If every runner on this list stepped to the line at the peak of their high school fitness, the favorite would be Ashley Brasovan.
On paper, Caroline Wells owns the faster lifetime best (16:40.20) compared to Brasovan's 16:41.42. But championship cross country isn't run on paper. It rewards positioning, patience, toughness, and the ability to respond when the pace changes over the final kilometer.
Brasovan proved she could win under the brightest lights by capturing Foot Locker Nationals and nearly defending her title the following season. Against the strongest field in America, she consistently delivered.
In this dream race, expect Wells to push the pace early while Jennifer Simpson patiently stalks the leaders. But when the race reaches its decisive final 800 meters, Brasovan's championship experience and closing strength make the difference once again.
The Ultimate Fantasy 5K: Projected Finish
| Place | Runner | Projected Time | Rationale |
| 1st | 16:38 | The article explicitly names her the winner due to her "championship experience and closing strength." She would likely edge out her 16:41.42 PB in a race this competitive. | |
| 2nd | 16:40 | Named the runner-up by the author. She owns the fastest PB (16:40.20) and would "push the pace early," finishing right around her state-record time. | |
| 3rd | 16:48 | The article notes she would "patiently stalk the leaders." Given her 16:55.00 PB and pedigree as a future Olympic medalist, she'd likely be pulled to a faster time by the lead pack. | |
| 4th | 16:55 | Tied with Simpson for the third-fastest PB on the list (16:55.00). Her 12th-place finish at Foot Locker Nationals proves she can hang with the elite. | |
| 5th | 16:56 | Right on Benton's heels. She has a PB of 16:56.00 and was incredibly consistent as a three-time Foot Locker National qualifier. | |
| 6th | 17:15 | Her PB is 17:20.91, but with her "immense national-level talent" and NXN experience, a fast pace would likely pull her to a slight PR. | |
| 7th | 17:25 | Described as a "tactical master" with a PB of 17:30.00, in a deep field, she would likely draft well and improve her time. | |
| 8th | 17:30 | No PB is listed, but as a two-time Foot Locker National Finalist (15th overall), she fits perfectly into this low-17-minute pack. | |
| 9th | 17:40 | Raced primarily in the 2-mile/3-mile era, making a 5K time a bit harder to project. However, as a two-time Foot Locker qualifier, she'd still clock an elite time. | |
| 10th | 17:45 | The hardest to project since she raced 1.5-mile and 2-mile distances before the 5K was standardized. However, as the "original cross-country superstar," she would still hold her own against the modern greats. |
One More Name Worth Mentioning: Parker Valby
There is one athlete who doesn't quite fit this conversation. Her omission from the Top 10 isn't a reflection of ability-it's simply a reminder that this ranking evaluates high school cross country résumés, not what athletes accomplished after graduation.
Parker Valby's high school résumé at East Lake doesn't place her inside the all-time Florida high school XC rankings. She never won a state cross country championship, finishing third at the 2018 FHSAA Finals.
However, if every Florida distance legend raced today at their current level, the outcome would look very different.
Since high school, Valby has become one of the greatest collegiate distance runners in NCAA history, winning six NCAA titles and emerging as one of the world's top professionals. With a sub-14:40 5,000-meter personal best on the track, she would likely separate from this legendary field by a substantial margin.
