It's an exciting time of year! After a long summer break--hopefully filled with countless miles of base training--our high school harriers (sans class of 2011) are back in action. This weekend many teams in the Orlando Metro area will open their preseason with the 2nd Annual Ted Benz XC Jamboree, named in honor of the recently retired legendary Central Florida coach.
The Colonial boys, state championship hopefuls this season, will be favored to run the show with a miniscule amount of points if last season is any indicator. Andres Arroyo will lead the way for Colonial and is expected to battle Billy Anguish of Winter Park for individual honors. Winter Park should be able to wrap up second place with their solid depth. While First Academy, Hagerty, Timber Creek, and George Jenkins are likely to battle it out for the remaining top five team positions.
For the girls, Hagerty will be slightly less potent this year with ace Bryce Seymour transferring to Circle Christian; however, their great coaching staff led by veteran coach Jay Getty (former coach of Olympian Jenny Barringer-Simpson) has given them a deep roster with only a 16 second gap between #2 Sarah Ankli and #5 Tiffany Garguilo based on last year's season best times. With Seymour's vacancy, the team's new leader will be Amy Ankli who is coming off of a solid track season that included times of 5:12 for 1600 and 11:27 for 3200.
Colonial's women will hope to give Hagerty a challenge... we'll see who put in the most work over the summer. A host of other teams are very close together including First Academy, an upstart Merritt Island squad, Lake Region, Winter Park, Lake Highlands Prep, and The Geneva School (without leader Mackenzie Wilson, who moved to Jacksonville). Your guess is as good as mine to predict the top five teams out of those!
