A breeze filled the air on a chilly morning at West Orange High School, the site of the 4A District 3 championships. The girls’ approached the starting line eager to run for their chances to qualify for next week’s regional meet. Bridget Blake of Dr. Phillips took the lead from the start and kept it up to remain in the lead over Boone’s Heather Classe and the Olympia pack of Emily Headley, Kaitlyn Campo, and Taylor Watson. Blake breezed to the finish with her winning time of 18:06.26. Campo outkicked Headley right at the end of the race, giving Campo second in 18:24.67 and Headley third place with her time of 18:25.13. These two led Olympia to a team district championship over Dr. Phillips, 36-45. Boone and Oviedo took third and forth respectively, advancing them into next week’s regional championships.
At the conclusion of the girls’ race, the boys lined up at the start line enthusiastic to get their district race started. It was clearly Mitchell Moore’s race as the Olympia Senior ran out hard and held the lead for the length of the race. Behind him was a pack consisting of Logan Kruse of Dr. Phillips and Olympia’s Nick Lehman and Daniel Dey. Moore easily finished first in 15:51.30, followed by teammate Lehman in 16:10.73. Rounding out the top 3 was Kruse, who recently came back from an injury and just overcame the flu, in a time of 16:14.57. Olympia’s 22 points allowed them to easily win the district team title and qualify for regional championships. Their team average of 16:22.68 allowed them to defeat Boone 22- 65. The same four teams that qualified for the girls were able to pull off a qualification for the regional meet in the boys’ race.
