American Heritage junior Teray Smith had a tremendous weekend competing back at home in Nassau. A native of The Bahamas, Teray flew back home to compete at the country's Junior Nationals event and came back to Fort Lauderdale as his country's Under 20 national champion.
Smith beat out a tough field in the 100 meters on Friday with a (wind legal) 10.42 over Blake Bartlett, who was .12 back. That came after his top seeded 10.50 out of heat 2 in the prelims. Former Floridian and fellow Bahamian Johnathan Farquharson was the second seed out of the prelims (10.57), but false started in the 100 finals. Farquharson graduated last year from Orlando Christian Prep and is a native of Freeport, Grand Bahama.
Then in Saturday action, the two were back at it again, this time in the 200 meters. Farquharson was the top seed with a 20.97 out of the prelims, with Smith third seed in 21.17. The finals were really hot with a stellar top three between those two and Bartlett again. Farquharson edged Smith out by just .03 for the wind-aided victory 20.83 to 20.86, with Bartlett close behind in 21.03.
After the meet the two Florida-Bahamians were named to the country's Junior CAC Team to represent The Bahamas at the CAC Championships (Central American and Caribbean Championship) in El Salvador at the end of the month. This is quite an honor for them. Congrats!
