Scouting Report: P.K. Yonge Boys

Ever since Garrett Westlake has run for P.K. Yonge as an 8th grader in 2009, the Blue Wave have not finished lower than fifth at the 1A Cross Country Finals. The senior has finished in the top fifteen individually the past three season and will be a contender for an individual title in 2012. He placed fifth at the state meet and has a personal best of 15:39. Coach Beth Godwin says he is planning on trying his hardest to take his division, and possibly others by storm. It's a bold statement, but a feasible one. Also, returning is junior Joe Janson n who will be the team's number two runner. Janson was the third member of the team to cross the line at state finishing in 25th place. Other returners with varsity experience include sophomore Brett Gerhardt, and senior Matt Van Arman, 

The problem for this team is depth. P.K. Yonge loses a wealth of experience with Jordan Brown, Derek Bolser, and David Dolan graduating. Westlake is a very strong number one and Janson is an average number two, but after that the roster gets shaky. Last year, the Blue Wave only took six to state and, placed third. This year, the rest of the team will have to step up and some new guys will have to come out to solidify the back end of the roster if they want a chance at even making the top ten.

Coach Godwin Says...

"P.K. Yonge is a K-12 school so we have quite a large team, albeit some of them youngsters.  I'm hoping to filter through the numbers and find some untapped talent to work with throughout the season.  Practices have been going well and I hope the meets will be an exposure, of sorts, to showcase some hard-working indiviuals."

"Garrett and Joe have been working very diligently and don't know the meaning of slacking off.  They always run their workouts with gusto and I'm glad to have them leading the boys' team.  On the girls' side, we have a few runners who have no lack in ability. I look forward to seeing how this season and each P.K. Yonge runners progresses. They are a good group of kids and working with them so far has been a great experience."
