Meet Information
Viking Invitational Details:
1. Start times and Location: Saturday, 9/2 at Northeast High School. The start and finish line will be in the field directly behind Sexton Elementary.
At this time, I am aiming for a 2 race format:
Girls start at 7:30 am
Boys start at 8:15 am
THIS RACE WILL BE HAND TIMED AND FINISH CARDS WILL BE HANDED TO EACH FINISHER. COACHES, PLEASE TALLY YOUR TEAM SCORES (A TALLY SHEET WILL BE PROVIDED) AND TURN THEM INTO THE SCORER TABLE UNDER THE PAVILION. WE WILL DO OUR BEST TO GET EVERYONES FINISH TIME, BUT PLEASE HAVE SOMEONE AT THE FINISH TO SECURE YOUR TEAMS FINISH TIMES AS WELL. AS THIS RACE GROWS, WE WILL LOOK TO HIRE A PROFESSIONAL TIMING COMPANY.
2. Bathrooms: We will have Port o Lets out by the starting/staging area. We will also have a boys and girls bathroom open at the football stadium (they are on the backside of the main stadium). We will also try to have a couple of extra Port o Lets at the stadium (football typically has them for the guest fans).
Please have a conversation with your athletes about being respectful and keeping the bathrooms clean. The school is opening the bathrooms at the stadium which is saving us a lot of money since we will not have to order multiple Port o Lets. The school may not be so generous in the future so PLEASE help us keep the costs down for this race so we can continue to have it at an affordable price. Thank you in advance!
3. Tents: You may have a team tent. The tent area will be in the center of the field outside of the baseball stadium. The edges of the field will be part of the course, so please set it up in the center/middle of the field to avoid obstructing the course. Please do not set up tents inside of the baseball/softball fields. I will aim to have the Northeast tent up so you will see the designated area.
4. Pavilion: The pavilion provides some level of shelter in case of rain showers. However, please be advised that it will also be used for tallying results and the awards ceremony so please save us some space!
5. Course: The course is 1 small loop, 2 big loops, and 1 small loop. It is all grass and is appropriate for spikes. Be warned that should we receive a lot of rain prior to the race, the fields will be wet and soft.
The course will be well marked with arrows on the ground and stakes/tape. I will also have parents along the key points in the course to guide the athletes around. We will have a short section, maybe 100 yards, of two-way traffic on the course. PLEASE ask your athletes to run single file through this section out of respect for the runners going in the opposite direction. This section is past the mile marker so I anticipate everyone will be spread out by that time in the race so it should be a non-issue. However, there is a high probability that the race leaders will cross paths with some of the trailing runners on both of the big loops.
I will distribute a course map as soon as possible.
6. Climbing Equipment: In one of the fields that we will be using for the race, there are several climbing apparatuses. I ask that everyone stay off of the apparatuses. I believe they are set up so that you would need a ladder to use any of them, such as the climbing wall, but I know kids can be creative and find ways to do things that may surprise us all. BE AWARE THAT I WILL HAVE TO DISQUALIFY ATHLETES IF THEY ARE FOUND PLAYING ON THESE APPARATUSES.
7. Spectators: One of the best parts of this course is the level of access that parents and coaches will have when watching their son/daughter/athlete compete. HOWEVER, due to the logistics of the course, there is a high probability of someone stepping onto the course and forgetting the race is going on. PLEASE, enjoy the race but watch out for where you cross the course and subsequently stand to ensure you dont become part of the race in an unfortunate way. I will have lots of arrows on the ground so if you find yourself standing on one, that is not a good place to be!
8. Parking: There is plenty of free parking for everyone! The best location to park will be on the 54th Avenue North side of the school. Sexton Elementary and the Northeast High Parking lot by the swimming pool will be open. Additionally, the parking lot by the track will be open as well and is a great place to park. If you park there, you will need to walk around the baseball field (there is a sidewalk to follow) to get to the course.
9. NOISE: ALONG THE EASTERN SIDE OF THE FIELD BEHIND SEXTON ELEMENTARY ARE SOME RESIDENTIAL HOMES AND APARTMENTS. I ANTICIPATE TEAMS/PARENTS ARRIVING AS EARLY AS 6:30 AM TO PREPARE FOR THE FIRST RACE. I WANT TO CONTINUE TO HOST THIS RACE ON AN ONGOING BASIS, SO PLEASE BE MINDFUL OF OUR NEIGHBORS AND ASK YOUR ATHLETES WHO MAY BE WARMING UP TO BE AWARE THAT THESE NEIGHBORS MAY NOT BE TOO RECEPTIVE TO AN EARLY MORNING WAKE UP CALL.
10. AWARDS: I am working on overall team awards and overall finisher awards. So please stick around after the race. More than likely there will be an award for the top 2 team winners (boys and girls) and the top 10 individual finishers on the boys and girls sides as well.
