Meet Recap

It was a cold and windy day out at Godby High School for the 9th Annual Jesse Forbes Invitational, but that didn't stop athletes from posting some nation leading times and new meet records. Doug Covert was on hand braving the elements as well to capture photos of this event.

The biggest splash came in the field events. Darrielle McQueen of North Florida Christian came into the long jump with a seed of 19-02.00 and she shattered that mark with a personal best and US#1 leap of 19-08.50. McQueen won the long jump in 2011 and has won the triple the past two years. Not to be out done she posted a US#2 jump of 39-1.5. Very, very impressive for the beginning of the 2013 season. Also, impressive was Maclay senior Stefanie Kurgatt. A week after her performance at the Brooks PR Invitational she broke the meet record in the 800 with a time of 2:20, won the 1600 in 5:23, and anchored Maclay's winning 4x400 meter relay in a time of 4:09.00.

Other performances of note include Caitlin Wilson of Godby who doubled in the 100 and 200 and the Godby sister duo of Jazmyn and Jerykah Evans who finished 1-2 in both the 100 and 300 meter hurdles.  Florida High's Ma'Rhea Everheart won the 400 and was second in both the 200 and long jump. Bernicia Holifield of Godby swept the throws as the home squad won easily with 142 points.

On the boys side, Jaylin Hayward of Godby was first in the 100 and third in the 200. Maclay senior Travis Covert won the 1600 meter run and was second in the 800. Three high jumpers cleared the 6'0 mark led by Keith Gavin of Wakulla who jumped 6-04.00. Teammate Corion Knight went 6-02.00 tying with Fester Little of Rutherford. Maclay edged out Florida High School and Rickards 105-99-94 for the team title.
