Top athletes from across the state headed to South Florida for the Sam Burley Hall of Fame Invitational in Miami. Noel Alexander was on-site snapping photos of all the action.



Lia King of Hallandale High School won the 100 hurdles in a season best and state leading time of 14.01. King had a big day finishing second in the 300's, second in the triple jump, and third in the long jump. In the sprints J'Nea Bellamy and Regine Williams of St. Thomas Aquinas both broke 12 seconds. Bellamy won in 11.93 and also finished second in the 200 behind Diamond Spaulding of American Heritage 24.42 to 24.44. Five girls went under 60 seconds in probably the most competitive race of the day. Adrianna Allen of Dr. Krop bested an impressive field with a time of 55.51. American Heritage went 1-2 in the 800 with Daesha Rogers and Rachelle Alexander. Rogers followed her 2:17.85 800 meter time up with a win in the 1600 meters, 5:13.75. Lourdes Brea of Lourdes (pictured above) took the 3200 meter run over Alexa Cruz.

The field events were solid as well led by DiShondria McCoo of host Southridge. McCoo won the long jump with a mark of 18-09 and triple jump 38-06.50. Senior Jasmine Williams of Carol City swept both the throws going 40-03 in the shot and 147-08 in  the disc. St. Thomas Aquinas was victorious in the team standings scoring 118 points. American Heritage was second with 82 and host Southridge finished third with 66 points.

 

The boys produced some very impressive marks as well. In the 100 meter dash,  four guys were under 11 secconds. Booker T. Washington goes 1-2 with senior Nicholas Norris winning in 10.79. Jerimy Strainge proved he is back to the Strainge of old after winning the 200 in 21.40, more than two tenths faster than his nearest competitor.  Walter Tucker dropped some very nice times in the 110 and 300 hurdles. The American Heritage senior finished first in the 110 by laying down a 13.89, the fastest in the state and in the nation for 2013! He also finished second in the 300s with a time of 39.41 behind Chris Prophet of Southridge (38.27) which are the first and fourth best in Florida, and US #3 and US#15 respectively. Tucker also was third in the discus with a throw of 149-03.
 
The distance races were solid as well with Belen senior Avery Lopez taking the 1600 meter run in 4:22.32. The top seven were all under 4:40. Teammate Fabian Tomas edged out Lopez 9:28.45 to 9.29.11.
 
In the field events three athletes cleared 6-0 in the high jump led by Christian Williams of American. Justin Crapps of Rockledge won the long jump in a very impressive 22-05.25 while Jamal Dorvilier of Southridge came in with a seed of 44-02.00 in the triple and went two feet better, 46-05.50. Thrower Kevin Delgado of Coral Park won the shot put in 57-9.50 over Fredrick Jones of Pace (56-11.50). Jones took first in the discus with a throw of 155-03.
 
Belen Jesuit finished first in the team standings with 73 points ahead of Miami Washington (53) and St. Thomas Aquinas with 48 points.
