Less than 48 hours after running 1:47.79 for 800 meters, Andres Arroyo was back on the track, and back to posting blazing times. The Colonial senior's time for the half mile at the Florida Relays was a US#1, second fastest by any American this year, and 8th fastest in the world. That was Thursday. Saturday morning, Arroyo ran at Embry Riddle Spikes Classic and posted a 9:01.34 for 3200 meters.
Much to dismay of the fans in Gainesville and rest of the running community, he opted out of the 1600 and 3200 at Florida Relays and headed to Daytona. For those in attendance he put on a show. Olivia Ortiz (who also won her 2013 debut in the 3200 meters) caught up with Andres after the race.
According to Mike Hill of Elite Timing who timed the race his splits were as follows:
63.9
67.6
(2:11.5)
68.1
70.2
(4:29.8)
71.4
68.6
(6:49.8) (2:20.0)
69.2
62.0
9:01.04 (2:11.2)
His time is the second fastest in the United States behind Ben Searel of Park City Utah who has ran 8:55.30. It is the tenth fastest time in Florida state history according to our records. It is ironic that former Winter Park star Brian Jaeger has the state record for two miles with a time of 8:56.98 for two miles which is the equivalent of 8:53.87 for 3200 meters. Jaeger set that mark in 1983. Arroyo's next meet? The Brian Jaeger Elite Classic next weekend at Winter Park. Arroyo's goal? Break nine minutes.
