There is no doubt Florida is one of the most talented states in the country when it comes to track and field. We wanted to honor the best of the best with our 2013 Track & Field Athlete of the Year awards. Trayvon Bromell of Gibbs High School is our winner in the Boys Sprints/Hurdles Event category. Bromell had a spectacular senior season picking up his first two state championships, and winning several national meets, earning himself even more postseason hardware and recognition.
One and done was how Bromell's sophomore season played out. After injuring himself in the first meet he would run nothing else in the regular season. His time at the Golden South Classic, 11.33. A lot has changed in two years for the Gibbs standout. Coming into the 2013 season, he wanted to go out with a bang and show college coaches and the rest of the country why he belonged among the elite runners in the country. He rolled through regular season competition in the 100 and picked up his first ever state title, when he beat Kendal Williams of Stanton Prep at the 2A State Finals. He anchored Gibbs to a come from behind victory in the 4x100 meter relay and finished second to Williams in the 200.
While his success and times in the regular season were certainly impressive, it was what he did in the postseason that really cemented himself as one of Florida's best sprinters ever. The Baylor bound star won the Golden South Classic in a time of 10.27 the third fastest time in the country, not wind-aided. One week later, against a stacked field at the Adidas Grand Prix in New York City, Bromell crossed the line fourth. Picked as one of the favorites and not performing as he had hoped in the less than ideal conditions, he rebounded two weeks later at the Great Southwest Classic in New Mexico. Running a blistering 9.99 (4.0 mph wind), he became the first high schooler to break the ten second barrier in history. The senior wasn't done yet picking up an outdoor national championship in the 100 meters and finishing second in the 200 at New Balance Nationals. Recently, he competed against the top junior level athletes at the USA Championships and came away with more hardware winning the 100 meter dash in 10.47. He will compete at the 2013 Pan-Am Junior Championships next month in Medelin, Columbia.
In addition to being our Boys Sprint/Hurdles Athlete of the Year, Trayvon was named the Gatorade Florida Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year as well as Gatorade Boys Track & Field National Athlete of the year. Congratulations to Trayvon on his accomplishments and a wonderful 2013 season.
