After finishing second at state in 2011, the Bolles girls cross country team accomplished the mission in 2012, and brought home the 2A state championship. Currently, ranked in our composite rankings as the second best team regardless of class, the Bulldogs, look to be in great shape for a second consecutive title. Coach Tony Ryan, who is in his 11th season, returns all seven of his girls from a team that placed the top five in the top 22 spots, and the top seven in the top 40 spots. Mackenzie Wilson took over the reigns after transferring from Episcopal. The sophomore finished second and will be one of the top returning runners in 2013. She is joined by incoming 8th grader Rachel Shapiro (8th), incoming freshman Allison Hajda (12th), senior Lily Arnold (13th), and junior Ashley DeHechavarria (22nd). Senior Sarah Jones and freshman Aoife O'Riordan also have state meet experience and round out the top seven.
The success didn't stop after cross country. The Bulldog continued to show their speed on the track. Arnold, Hajda, Rice, and Wilson teamed up on the 4x800 meter relay that finished third. Then Hajda and Arnold finished 7th and 11th in the 1600, before ending their night with a 14th and 15th place showing in the 800. Shaprio and Wilson compted in the 3200 where they were 5th and 10th respectively. Eight girls were under 5:40 for 1600 meters while four dipped under twelve minutes for 3200 meters.
Coach Ryan was in his native Ireland for most of the summer, but that didn't stop the girls from putting in the work. Under the direction of Coach Pentaleri, the team put in two months of steady miles. Fourteen girls went to Brevard Running Camp and 18 girls went to the Bolles three day mini-camp in Tallahassee where they had an opportunity to run the state meet course and also workout with their neighbors at Maclay. It was also an opportunity to strengthen their bond as a team. Ryan says that is one of the things that makes this group so special because varsity girls inspire the younger girls and junior varsity squad.
Bolles is the team to beat in 2A. Our preseason rankings, project the Bulldogs for 53 points with their top five runners crossing the line in the top 20 spots. Their closest competitor, Lemon Bay, is slated for 168 points. Wilson is their number one but behind her they are all very close. Their 2-5 split is nearly 32 seconds and the 2-7 split just under sixty seconds. The strength of this squad is depth they lose two seniors at the end of the year, but are still loaded with their other five, and a slew of junior varsity runners waiting in the wings. Back to back is pretty much a guarantee, but our rankings through 2015 having them picking up a string of four! Safe to say, it's a good time to be a Bulldog fan.
Coach Ryan Says...
"Our varsity girls will compete in four regular season meets: Katie Caples, Adidas Challenge in North Carolina, Bale-n-Trail, and Pre-State. We will add two more meets for our JV runners, since their season will end much sooner. Our team goal every year is to stay healthy going into the post-season, run our best races of the year in the post-season, and, hopefully put ourselves in a position to be in the hunt for a state title... and have a lot of fun along the way!"
