Scouting Report: Holy Trinity Girls

Holy Trinity has been one of the premier girls cross country programs in the state for the past decade. The Tigers made it ten podium finishes in eleven years after finishing second in 2012 behind Oak Hall. Two time state 1A cross country champion Julie Wollrath, is the front runner of this team. Joining her this year is transfer Shelby Smith who comes from East Grand Rapids High School in Michigan along with sister Sydney. Shelby will slip into the number two spot, while Sydney will round out the starting line up. Freshman Samantha Folio returns after a 22nd place showing at state as an eighth grader and will be the number three runner. Maleia Storum, a transfer from Cocoa Beach High School gives the team added experience at the number four spot. She was 20th at the 2A Cross Country Finals in 2012. Also in the mix are seventh grader Maria Groppel and  eighth grader Chelsea Basford.

During the outdoor track season, the current Tigers, and Tigers to be put up some impressive numbers. Wollrath finished second in both the 1.600 and 3,200 meters. She boasts personal bests of 4:58.24, and 10:42.81. Wollrath and Folio were both members of the school's fifth place 4x800 meter relay. Folio finished 7th in the 1,600 meter run in 5:25.46. The Tigers finished second as a team. Shelby Smith.ran an impressive 2:21.77 for 800 meters and 5:33.84 for 1600. Storum boasts a 5:32 personal best in that event. If the speed, translates to the cross country course this season other teams are in for a surprise.

The preseason rankings had Holy Trinity ranked fourth behind Oak Hall, Shorecrest, and Providence, but that was before the transfers entered the equation. Oak Hall is loaded and should be the top contender, but look for the Tigers to make a run. They kicked off the season at the Wickham Park Jamboree and looked very impressive with Wollrath and Smith going 1-2.This team could have five girls under 19 minutes by seasons end. Wollrath is clearly below that mark and the others are in the 19:00 - 19:30 category.Another podium finish and potential state championship are definite possibilities for the Holy Trinity girls in 2013.
