Flashback: Sammy Watkins The Track Star

At the 2014 Discover Orange Bowl, Clemson wide receiver Sammy Watkins showed why he was the best receiver in the country and will be the top receiver taken in the NFL Draft. Watkins put up a Orange Bowl and Clemson school record 227 yards receiving and scored two touchdowns. Before the bowl MVP, was tearing up the gridiron in South Carolina, he was a track and football star at South Fort Myers High School. We flashback to his trackster days to see where that speed first blossomed! Congratulations to Sammy on all of his success!

As a senior, Watkins was the state champion in the 200 meters. He posted a time of 21.11 into a -1.8 headwind. He was also second in the 100 to FSU freshman Levonte Whitfield, who will be playing for the Seminoles football team in the National Championship game. Watkins was second in 10.72 to Whitfield's 10.69 which was into a nasty -4.1 headwind!  At the end of the night, he competed with his teammates and clocked a 3:19.49 in the 4x400 meters for a runner-up finish. See what the speedster had to say about his big night.

Earlier in the year, Watkins headlined our inauguaral flrunners.com Primetime Invitational. He was third  in the 100 meter, but came back to win the 200 his best event in a time of 21.70. Check out the race video along with a post race interview below!
