Salute To Seniors: Hallie Grimes - Land O' Lakes High School

What was your most memorable race/moment?

I would have to say the 400m final at the George Steinbrenner meet at USF this year. This was a race that I really wanted to win and I finally got over the hump this year by running my PR of 55.51 seconds. Beyond that, all of the State Final 400m races over the past four years have been memorable.

Who would you consider your biggest competition over your four years?

Wow, that's difficult because I have ran against so many really incredible runners over my career including Robyn Reynolds, Sharirka Barnett, and Jorian Ordway.  I would have to go with Jorian since I faced her in the Steinbrenner meet a few times and in the regionals and state finals in 2011, 2012, and 2013.

What was your greatest accomplishment?

Definitely making it to the final 400m race at the state meet in each of my four years. I don't think that any person from my school has ever gone to state and been a medalist for all four years.

If you could do it all over again what would you change about your running career in high school?

I would only change one thing which would have been to run a PR in the 400m final in this year's state meet. That would have given me an excellent chance of finally winning a state title.

What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?

Mostly injuries with my legs and feet. I battled through shin splints, foot injuries, and other physical problems at the end of my senior year which made it very difficult to compete at the level that I am capable of.

What will you miss the most?

That's easy. My teammates and coaches. I really enjoyed the team aspects of track and field. I made lots of friends and enjoyed competing with my teammates. My coach, Rock Ridgeway has been a real mentor for me and was always supportive of my personal goals.  I will miss them very much.

What advice would you give to younger athletes?

I would tell younger athletes to work hard and always give 100%. Also set goals for each season.  Set the goals high and then bust your tail to try and achieve them.

What influence has your coach had with respect to your performance and overall life goals?

Coach Ridgeway has been a great motivator and supporter for my entire high school career.  He taught me so much about running and race strategies.  He's such a nice person as well and I will always be close to Coach Rock !

What are your college plans?

I will be attending the University of North Florida and running on the track team. It is very exciting!

Who would you like to say thank you to?

I would like to thank my coaches and my teammates.  Also, thank you to my family and all of our friends that came out to see me run over my career.
