West Orange girl's cross country team accomplished one of their best seasons in school history in 2013. Junior Jayden Davila-McClary became the first runner in nearly thirty years to advance to state for the Warriors. The was 11th at the regional championship and just 22 points shy of qualifying for state. Injuries to their lone senior Nicole Kvitkauskas and Felicia Miller didn't help, but it did open the door for other runners to gain varsity experience. Davilla-McClary will be the number one runner with the rest of her top seven returning in Evelyn Hall, Alexandra Miller, Madison Tharp, Felicia Miller, Alexis Cornstubble, and Mariana Wells, as well as a very important eighth runner in Samantha Golden. Coach Boston is uncertain whether Josie Banks, the number three runner from two years ago will return this coming year, but says the strength of this team will be depth, depth, depth.
"In addition to those girls I expect, Rania Benbrahim, a rising 10th grader who ran track for the first time last year (5:56, 1600) and Alison Johnson a mid-distance runner with a very competive fire from track and field to emerge to help. We also have more than a half dozen freshman that will be coming into this season. We look to be in good shape. I had a couple girls go to Embry Riddle running camp and they loved it. Training has been good. I allways have my girls run with the boys. We have done a lot of swimming, strength training mixed with our endurance work."
The team is focusing on two major meets this season; the North Port XC Invitational to take on some new blood from southwest Florida as well as our flrunners.com Invitational where they hope to be in the Race of Champions. As far as team goals, the Lady Warriors hope to win the Metro Conference and district tournament, and advance to the state meet, a three-peat no team in their school's history has accomplished. 4A Region 1 is loaded with Metro Conference and Central Florida schools including favorites Winter Park and Olympia, as well as Dr. Phillips. Those regular season meets, should give West Orange the "battle tests" needed to make the Cross Country finals.
