Sinclaire Johnson Remains Perfect On Season, Sets New PR At Hagerty Invite

On-Site Coverage

The second week of the season provided more sparks. Nearly two dozen teams and several hundred athletes made their way to Seminole State College in Oviedo for the Hagerty Invitational. The three lap course was very spectator friendly and made for an enjoyable time on an other wise hot and humid Saturday morning.

For the girl's, Sinclaire Johnson (pictured above) of Lake Brantley continued her spectacular junior season. Johnson, Julie Wollrath, Fatema Jaffer, and Autumn Bartlett started out the race as the front runners, but after two miles, the group dwindled down to two. Wollrath, the 3x 1A state champion, coming back to cross country from a ten month lay off couldn't  hang with the track speed of Johnson. The Patriot standout told me she treated the last mile like a 1,600m on the track, and used that speed to pull away in a new personal best of 18:27.60. Wollrath was second in 18:41.30 with Jaffer in third in 18:48.90. University senior Autumn Bartlett was the fourth runner in the girl's elite varsity race to dip under 19 minutes, running 18:58, a big improvement from what she ran on this course last year.

In a competitive team battle, Timber Creek (82 points) led by Briana Burnett's 9th place finish defeated Dr. Phillips (90), Merritt Island (95), and Lake Mary (105).

The boy's race was a three person contest between Steven Cross of Merritt Island, Garrett Camps of Melbourne, and Lake Mary's Ryan DeGale. The trio came through the mile mark at around 4:55. DeGale had a slight lead over the group with a mile to go, but Cross and Camps who battled it out last week at the Astronaut Invitational turned on the burners. Cross crossed the line first in a new season best time of 15:46.80 to clinch his third win in a row this season. Camps and DeGale were both under 16 minutes in 15:51.00 and 15:54.60 respectively.

Lake Mary beat out Melbourne 87-89 to win the team title. Winter Park was third with last week's Astronaut Invite champions Lyman fourth, and Dr. Phillips rounding  out the top five.
