Colleen Openshaw has developed a reputation as one of the top runners in the state. She has been an integral part of the Creekside girls cross country success over the past few years. Outside of the competitive running scene, Colleen has also excelled in the classroom, and was recruited by some of the top academic schools in the country. She ultimately decided to attend the University of South Carolina and participate in the honors program. I caught up with her about her decision to become a Gamecock.
What was the recruiting process like for you?
The recruiting process was really exciting. It was a little hectic to keep track of everything on top of my regular routine, but all the coaches I talked with were so friendly and helpful. It'll be tough to leave my team next year, but every college team I met was so welcoming and just all around great people.
Where else did you consider?
I also considered the University of Florida, Emory University, Johns Hopkins University, Duke University, and Vanderbilt University.
Why did you choose USC?
I chose the University of South Carolina because it had the perfect balance for me between athletics and academics. The Honors College was a great fit for me and allows me to compete at a Division I school while still getting an excellent education. When I went on my official visit I left knowing that I couldn't picture myself anywhere else.
What have you learned through high school running that will stay with you through college?
High school running has been such an important part of who I am. It's taught me that having a goal and working hard sets you up for success. It's taught me that we are stronger as a team than we are alone. Having a few injuries early on in my running career taught me that every setback is an opportunity to improve yourself even if it's not through running. Swimming laps when all you want to do is run builds a lot of mental strength.
How special was it for you to win a State Title your senior year?
It was so incredible to win a state title this year. The team had big goals going into the season, but seeing them become a reality was unbelievable. Our team really is a family and winning state together was the best reward we could ask for.
What are your best memories from high school running?
I have so many fond memories from my high school running career. There are the many long runs, tempo runs, and workouts that helped the team bond together. There are the pasta dinners, summer running camps, and weight room sessions. Then having all those things come together and translate into a race. I'm looking forward to making even more memories this track season!
What are your goals for your time as a Gamecock?
I definitely want to improve on my times and become a stronger, more efficient runner. I hope to make the SEC travel team and stay healthy! I'm doing premed so I'm hoping to set myself up for acceptance into med school later on. I've heard so much about the school spirit at South Carolina, and I'm looking forward to experiencing that. Go Gamecocks!
What advice can you give younger athletes about the recruiting process?
Reach out to coaches instead of waiting for them to come to you. Don't be shy about emailing or calling them, they expect it. Pursue any school you're interested in early on. Don't sell yourself short either, you'll never know if you don't try!
