Workout Wednesday: Ft. Myers Elite Youth Running Club

Workout Wednesday isn't just for the top high school programs. This week, with the help of Coach Tyler Stowell we take a look at how some of the youngsters in the Ft. Myers Elite Youth Running Club are training as they prepare for this weekend's Ft. Myers Optimist Invite and the FLYRA Middle School State Championship at the end of October.

Workout:

  • 12x200 @ 800 pace with 90 seconds rest

Splits:

  • Group 1 - 33, 34, 33, 33, 34, 33, 34, 33, 33, 34, 33, 32
  • Group 2 - 38, 39, 38, 40, 39, 40, 40, 41, 40, 40, 41, 39

We caught up with Coach Stowell afterwards to talk about the workout.

What is the importance of this workout?

The importance of the workout is to create leg turnover and introduce speed to the kids. We put in a base training just logging miles from June 1st to August 30th.

Do you do something similar every week or mix it up?

We have a series of workouts from 200s to mile repeats depending on the schedule between races. We are scheduled to have six more Wednesday workouts leading up to the state meet on the 31st.

How do you cater the workouts to your younger runners?

I like to keep the speed workouts lower mileage and higher intensity. The kids love to work in their groups and push each other. Club is free and open to 5th-8th grade. I do it for the love of the sport and help kids with character and gain knowledge of the sport.
